Suzuki Ignis (2016-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Easy to drive around town	Plasticky cabin
Lively 1.2-litre engine	Very small boot
Cute and unusual looks	Noisy on a long drive

Quick Summary

The Suzuki Ignis (2016-present) is a characterful and compact SUV that excels in urban environments. Shorter than a MINI and almost as narrow as a Volkswagen Up, it's ideally suited to Britain's congested towns and cities. Despite its diminutive dimensions, the Ignis offers surprising practicality with clever rear seating that slides forward and backward individually, allowing you to prioritise either passenger comfort or boot space. The peppy 1.2-litre petrol engine delivers lively performance around town, whilst the tall, flat design makes parking remarkably easy. With 260 litres of boot space (204 litres on four-wheel drive models), it's one of the most versatile small cars available.

Running costs are a major strength, with genuine 50mpg achievable on average—better than most budget SUV rivals. The engine uses a metal timing chain rather than a rubber belt, eliminating costly replacement expenses over the car's lifetime. Air-conditioning and Bluetooth connectivity come as standard on all models, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available on mid-spec and above. Whilst the interior feels plasticky in places and the infotainment system is fiddly, these minor compromises are forgivable given the affordable price point. The Ignis is a fun, characterful choice for those seeking a town-friendly car with genuine personality and low running costs.

Best for: Urban drivers seeking a fun, characterful, and easy-to-park car; budget-conscious buyers wanting low running costs; those prioritising practicality and versatility in a compact package.

Not ideal for: Long-distance motorway cruising; buyers requiring a spacious boot; those seeking a premium interior finish or advanced infotainment systems.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Ignis if: You're an urban driver seeking a fun, characterful, and easy-to-park car; you're budget-conscious and want low running costs; or you prioritise practicality and versatility in a compact package.

Consider alternatives if: You require a spacious boot, plan frequent long-distance motorway journeys, or seek a premium interior finish and advanced infotainment systems.

Competitive Position: The Suzuki Ignis is a standout choice in the budget compact SUV segment, offering genuine character and urban practicality at an affordable price. Whilst the MG ZS edges ahead on user ratings and value score, the Ignis's superior manoeuvrability, distinctive styling, and lively driving experience make it the better choice for city dwellers. It matches the Fiat Panda on overall ratings and competes favourably on value, whilst offering more modern technology and a more engaging drive. Against the Dacia Duster, the Ignis is more nimble and characterful, though the Duster offers more space for those willing to sacrifice urban agility.
