Tesla Model S (2014-present) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Mind-bending acceleration The interior could be better finished
Excellent range and charging network Some question marks over reliability
Very well equipped More recent Tesla models are cheaper to buy new

Quick Summary

The Tesla Model S is an all-electric saloon that revolutionised the automotive industry by proving electric cars could be comfortable, practical, and thrilling. From its inception, the Model S offered an impressive range—the original 60kWh model claimed 240 miles per charge, far exceeding competitors like the Nissan Leaf. With a spacious interior accommodating four adults comfortably, an enormous 709-litre boot, plus an 89-litre frunk, and optional seven-seat configuration, it combines practicality with cutting-edge technology. The sleek design, high-definition touchscreen infotainment, and pared-back interior set it apart from conventional vehicles.

Performance is exceptional, with even base rear-wheel-drive models achieving 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds, whilst the 85kWh Performance Plus variant manages 4.2 seconds. Running costs are remarkably low, with charging approximately £72 per 1,000 miles versus £284 for comparable petrol-powered vehicles. The expanding Supercharger network enhances long-distance viability. Servicing is minimal, requiring only cabin filters, tyre balancing, brake fluid checks, and air conditioning servicing. Over-the-air updates continuously improve functionality. However, insurance costs are high due to the vehicle's classification, and some reliability concerns persist, though newer models show improvement.

Best for: Drivers seeking an electric vehicle with exceptional performance, long range, advanced technology, and low running costs; those comfortable with premium pricing and willing to embrace electric motoring.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising traditional interior quality, or drivers concerned about reliability and support networks compared to established manufacturers.

The Verdict

You should buy the Model S if: You're seeking an electric vehicle with exceptional performance, impressive range, advanced technology, and minimal running costs, and you're comfortable with premium pricing.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise traditional interior quality, require established reliability and support networks, or are budget-conscious about electric vehicle purchases.

Competitive Position: The Tesla Model S remains a compelling choice in the premium electric vehicle market, offering mind-bending acceleration, excellent range, and a comprehensive Supercharger network. Whilst the Porsche Taycan delivers a more engaging driving experience and superior interior refinement, and the Jaguar I-Pace matches the Model S's user ratings, the Tesla's combination of performance, practicality, and lower cost makes it an excellent option for those prioritising value within the premium electric segment. The Audi E-Tron, though offering competitive value, falls slightly behind in expert ratings.

No engine with a “billion” moving parts, no transmission, no extras such as turbo chargers or intricate air intake systems just highly reliable electric motors means very little need for maintenance. Brakes last years and years because there is no need to use them much. A full tank costs a fraction of a fill up at the local pump. The included high tech is second to none. Software updates keep up with Jones and resolve what can be major issues with other cars.
