Tesla Model X (2016-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
One of the most practical electric SUVs	Expensive to buy new
Hilariously quick	Not as fun to drive as some rivals
One of the only large seven-seat EVs on sale	Lumpy ride on really big alloys

Quick Summary

The Tesla Model X (2016-present) is a fantastically versatile electric SUV/MPV crossover that stands out as one of the only large seven-seat electric vehicles available. It offers an official driving range of 301-314 miles (WLTP) from its 100kWh lithium-ion battery pack, with real-world expectations around 250 miles in varied conditions. The Model X is available in conventional five- or seven-seat layouts, plus an executive six-seat configuration, making it exceptionally practical for families. Its distinctive Falcon Wing rear doors provide excellent access to the third row, though they can be prone to reliability issues and are slower than conventional doors.

Performance is extraordinary, with the Model X Long Range delivering sub-5.0 second 0-60mph acceleration and 417bhp, whilst the Performance variant achieves 2.6 seconds with 611bhp. The car excels as a refined commuter with minimal wind and motor noise, adjustable air suspension, and a vast boot offering up to 2,431 litres with seats folded. Running costs are significantly lower than petrol, diesel, or plug-in hybrid alternatives, with home charging costing less than equivalent combustion-engined vehicles. The Tesla Supercharger network provides rapid charging capabilities, delivering 100 miles in approximately 10 minutes. However, it isn't as engaging to drive as some rivals, and tyre costs can be substantial given the large wheel sizes.

Best for: Families seeking a practical, spacious electric SUV with exceptional performance, those prioritising low running costs and access to the Tesla Supercharger network, and buyers wanting one of the few large seven-seat electric vehicles available.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those seeking engaging handling comparable to sports SUVs, or drivers concerned about high tyre maintenance costs and insurance premiums.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Model X if: You need a practical, spacious electric SUV with exceptional performance, prioritise low running costs and access to the Tesla Supercharger network, or want one of the few large seven-seat electric vehicles available.

Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, seeking engaging handling comparable to sports SUVs, or concerned about high tyre maintenance costs and insurance premiums.

Competitive Position: The Tesla Model X is an exceptional electric SUV that stands apart as one of the only large seven-seat EVs on the market. Whilst the Volvo XC90 T8 offers plug-in hybrid versatility and the Mercedes-Benz EQC and Audi E-Tron provide five-seat electric alternatives, the Model X's combination of practicality, performance, and low running costs is unmatched. It isn't as engaging to drive as some rivals, but its outrageous acceleration, vast boot space, and access to the extensive Tesla Supercharger network make it a seriously compelling choice for families willing to invest in premium electric motoring.
