Toyota Corolla (2019-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very well equipped	The 2.0-litre is much pricier than the 1.8
The Touring Sport estate is roomy	Surprisingly cramped rear seats and boot in the hatchback
Efficient and economical hybrid powertrains	The Trek model has SUV looks, but no off-road ability

Quick Summary

The Toyota Corolla (2019-present) is a pleasant and modern family car that succeeds the Auris with fresh styling, improved driving dynamics, and efficient hybrid powertrains. Available as a hatchback, saloon, or Touring Sports estate, it offers a sweet middle ground for buyers seeking an efficient alternative to diesel without the complexity of plug-in hybrid technology. The car features two full hybrid options: a 1.8-litre with 120bhp (138bhp post-2023 facelift) or a 2.0-litre with 177bhp (193bhp post-facelift). Both deliver real-world economy exceeding 45mpg, with the 1.8 approaching its claimed figures in gentle driving. The 2023 facelift brought digital dials, an improved 10.5-inch infotainment system, and refined hybrid powertrains.

The Corolla excels in comfort and refinement, with a light yet precise steering feel, supple ride quality, and excellent standard equipment including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, and heated front seats. However, the hatchback suffers from surprisingly cramped rear legroom and a modest 361-litre boot compared to rivals like the VW Golf. The Touring Sports estate significantly improves practicality with 596 litres of boot space and more rear legroom than even the Skoda Octavia. Servicing is competitively priced with fixed-price plans available. The 2.0-litre engine commands a premium over the 1.8, and motorway economy matches rather than exceeds efficient diesels.

Best for: Buyers seeking an efficient, well-equipped family car who wish to avoid diesel and plug-in complexity, those prioritising refinement and comfort, and families needing space (Touring Sports estate). Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum rear passenger room and boot space in the hatchback, buyers expecting superior motorway economy compared to diesel rivals, or those seeking the most affordable option in the segment.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Corolla if: You seek an efficient, well-equipped family car whilst avoiding diesel and plug-in complexity, prioritise refinement and comfort, or need practicality with the Touring Sports estate. Consider alternatives if: You require maximum rear passenger room and boot space in a hatchback, expect superior motorway economy compared to diesel rivals, or seek the most affordable option in the segment. Competitive Position: The Toyota Corolla (2019-present) is a strong contender in the family hatchback market, offering excellent standard equipment, genuine hybrid efficiency, and refined driving dynamics. Whilst the hatchback's rear space lags behind rivals like the VW Golf and Ford Focus, the Touring Sports estate addresses this comprehensively. The Corolla's real-world economy and low running costs make it compelling for town-focused driving, though diesel alternatives match motorway efficiency. The Ford Focus edges ahead for driving engagement and user satisfaction, whilst the Golf commands premium appeal. For buyers prioritising refinement, equipment, and hybrid technology without compromise, the Corolla represents an excellent choice, particularly in estate form. Read our full Toyota Corolla Review
