Toyota Land Cruiser (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Family-friendly, well appointed cabin	Quite thirsty, despite mild hybrid tech
Unburstable build quality	Diesel engine clattery at low speeds
Rugged 4x4 skillset off road	Boot space compromised by 48v hardware

Quick Summary

The Toyota Land Cruiser (2026) represents the pinnacle of Toyota's SUV ambitions, offering an indestructible, go-anywhere, do-anything 4x4 built on a ladder-frame chassis optimised for serious off-roading. At nearly five metres long and standing 1,935mm tall, it's one of the largest cars on sale today, providing an imperious driving position and commanding views of the road. The spacious, well-appointed cabin features individually heated and ventilated rear seats, a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a standard head-up display. With 742 litres of boot space (expanding to 2,000 litres with rear seats folded), it comfortably accommodates families and their luggage, whilst the innovative rear window opens separately from the tailgate for added convenience.

Powered by a 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine producing 202bhp, the Land Cruiser delivers adequate performance with a 0-62mph time of 10.9 seconds. Whilst on-road refinement is respectable, the vehicle's true calling lies off-road, where its permanently engaged 4WD system, electronic centre and rear differential locks, low-range transfer box, and electronically detachable front anti-roll bar make it one of the most capable off-roaders available. Running costs are substantial, with CO2 emissions of 280g/km resulting in £640 annual VED, whilst fuel consumption averages just under 30mpg. Annual servicing costs range from £385 to £545, though Toyota offers monthly payment plans to spread expenses.

Best for: Serious off-road enthusiasts, families needing a capable 4x4 with premium build quality, and buyers seeking a vehicle that will last decades with proven durability and reliability.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising fuel economy, or drivers who don't require genuine off-road credentials and serious 4x4 capability.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Land Cruiser if: You're a serious off-road enthusiast, need a capable 4x4 with uncompromising build quality, or seek a family vehicle that will last decades with proven Toyota durability and reliability.

Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, prioritise fuel economy, don't require genuine off-road credentials, or prefer more sophisticated on-road dynamics and refinement.

Competitive Position: The Toyota Land Cruiser (2026) is a highly capable and distinctive offering in the premium 4x4 market. Whilst the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Audi Q7 offer greater luxury appeal and the Land Rover Discovery provides superior value and on-road refinement, the Land Cruiser stands apart with its legendary durability, serious off-road prowess, and unburstable build quality. It's the choice for those who prioritise substance over style and require a vehicle that will prove its worth over many years or even decades. This is Toyota's answer to the Ineos Grenadier and Mercedes-Benz G-Class, offering proven reliability at a competitive price point.
