Vauxhall Astra (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Price parity between engines and bodystyles	Others are roomier and more practical
User-friendly cabin and infotainment	Rear visibility could be better
Choice of hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric power	Range could still be better on Astra Electric

Quick Summary

The Vauxhall Astra (2026) is the eighth-generation family hatchback, now under Stellantis ownership. The facelifted version features a revised exterior with the trademark Vauxhall Vizor grille, updated interior with satin grey dash plastics, and an enhanced powertrain lineup. Available as a five-door hatchback or Sports Tourer estate with price parity across all powertrains, the Astra offers genuine choice for modern drivers. The electric version now features a larger 58kWh battery for 281 miles of range, whilst the plug-in hybrid benefits from an expanded 17.2kWh battery for up to 52 miles of electric-only driving. A 1.2-litre mild-hybrid petrol with e-DCT automatic is the sole conventional engine, with a regular petrol variant arriving later in 2026.

The Astra delivers a confident and relaxed driving experience across all powertrains. The entry-level 1.2-litre petrol offers sweet handling and eager performance, whilst the mild-hybrid adds useful extra pace. The electric version provides effortless driving with instant torque, though its added weight slightly blunts agility. The plug-in hybrid combines refinement in electric mode with practical range, though the petrol engine sounds coarse when revved. Practicality is good but not exceptional, with a 422-litre boot in the hatchback (597 litres in the estate), though electric and plug-in hybrid models sacrifice some space to their batteries. The cabin is smart and logical with user-friendly infotainment, though rear visibility is somewhat restricted. Running costs are competitive, with the 1.2-litre petrol achieving around 40mpg in real-world use and the mild-hybrid offering a couple of miles per gallon better. The electric version should deliver approximately 225 miles of real-world range, whilst home charging costs around £15 per full charge.

Best for: Drivers seeking a well-rounded family hatchback with modern powertrain options, those valuing user-friendly technology and generous standard equipment, and buyers wanting price parity across different engine types.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum practicality or superior handling, drivers requiring exceptional rear visibility, or those seeking a hot hatch variant (VXR not currently available).

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Astra if: You seek a well-rounded family hatchback with modern powertrain options, value user-friendly technology and generous standard equipment, or want price parity across different engine types.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum practicality or superior handling, require exceptional rear visibility, or are seeking a hot hatch variant.

Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Astra (2026) is a well-rounded family hatchback that competes strongly in a crowded segment. Whilst the Volkswagen Golf offers superior handling and the Toyota Corolla provides greater reliability credentials, the Astra distinguishes itself through price parity across powertrains, user-friendly infotainment, and generous standard equipment. The Peugeot 308, sharing the same platform, offers similar appeal but with different styling. The Astra's modern electrified options and logical cabin design make it an attractive proposition for buyers seeking practicality without compromise, though those prioritising maximum space or dynamic handling may find rivals more suitable.
