Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Cheerful retro style | Very cramped in the back |
| Fuel-efficient diesel engines | Much smaller boot than the Golf on which it's based |
| Choice of hatchback and convertible models | The turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol is fast but a bit incongruous |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) is a masterclass in retro styling, reviving the iconic looks of the original whilst sitting on the proven underpinnings of the Golf. Available as both a three-door hatchback and a charming cabriolet with a folding roof, the Beetle prioritises character and charm over practicality. Whilst it shares the Golf's composed and capable driving dynamics, the Beetle's sloping roofline and three-door configuration mean rear passengers face tight access and limited headroom. The 310-litre boot is respectable for the class, though considerably smaller than the Golf it's based on.
The Beetle offers a wide range of engines, from the efficient turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol to muscular diesel options delivering impressive real-world fuel economy in the low-to-mid 40s. The flagship 217bhp 2.0-litre TSI provides spirited performance, whilst the optional seven-speed DSG automatic offers smooth convenience. Running costs remain sensible thanks to Golf-based mechanicals, affordable servicing, and reasonable insurance premiums. The cabriolet's insulated fabric roof performs admirably, lowering in just nine seconds at speeds up to 31mph, making it an engaging proposition for those prioritising style and character over space.
Best for: Buyers seeking a characterful, retro-styled car with charm and personality, those wanting a fun convertible option, and drivers valuing fuel efficiency and low running costs.
Not ideal for: Families needing rear passenger space, those requiring a large boot, or buyers prioritising practicality over style and character.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Beetle | 3/5 | 3.7/5 | 36.8% | 3.9/5 |
| Fiat 500 | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 44.3% | 4.2/5 |
| MINI Hatch | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.2% | 4.4/5 |
| DS 3 | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 48.6% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Beetle if: You're drawn to retro styling and character, seeking a fun convertible option, or prioritising fuel efficiency and low running costs over practicality.
Consider alternatives if: You need substantial rear passenger space, require a large boot, or value driving dynamics and modern technology over charm and personality.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) occupies a unique position in the retro-styled hatchback market, offering distinctive character and the choice of convertible motoring. Whilst rivals like the MINI and Fiat 500 match or exceed it in user ratings and value proposition, the Beetle's Golf-based engineering provides a composed, capable driving experience and sensible running costs. The cabriolet variant sets it apart from competitors, appealing to those seeking open-air motoring with retro appeal. However, its cramped rear accommodation and smaller boot limit its practicality compared to the Golf it's based on, making it a choice driven by emotion rather than logic.

3.7 Overall rating
(3 reviews)Having looked at many vw beetles. This particular car is exceptional in many ways, having only traveled 47,000 miles in its 16 year life and has complimentary bodywork. No other car ( perhaps Fiat) could compare to a Beetle.
Lovely looking car. Drives nice. Very comfortable. Missing Bluetooth.
The car at quick glance looks lovely but it’s still showing signs of the previous accident
