Reviewed a 2005 Volkswagen Beetle on 29 May 2021
Having looked at many vw beetles. This particular car is exceptional in many ways, having only traveled 47,000 miles in its 16 year life and has complimentary bodywork. No other car ( perhaps Fiat) could compare to a Beetle.

The car at quick glance looks lovely but it’s still showing signs of the previous accident

Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Cheerful retro style | Very cramped in the back |
| Fuel-efficient diesel engines | Much smaller boot than the Golf on which it's based |
| Choice of hatchback and convertible models | The turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol is fast but a bit incongruous |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) is a charming, retro-styled hatchback that prioritises character and appeal over practicality. Based on the Golf platform, it offers a composed and capable driving experience with a wide range of engines, from efficient diesels to a spirited 217bhp 2.0-litre TSI. Available as both a three-door hatchback and a convertible with a nine-second folding roof, the Beetle combines nostalgic styling with modern engineering. However, it sacrifices space and versatility, featuring a cramped rear and a modest 310-litre boot that expands to 905 litres with the rear seats folded.
Running costs are sensible, with diesel engines achieving low-to-mid 40s mpg in real-world driving and petrol variants offering similar efficiency in urban conditions. Insurance and servicing are affordable, with annual road tax at £150. The Beetle is a Marmite car—you'll either love its warm, friendly aesthetic or prefer the practicality of the Golf it's based on. For buyers seeking a vehicle that delivers character, charm, and a smile on every journey, the Beetle excels. Those prioritising space, boot capacity, or rear-seat comfort should look elsewhere.
Best for: Buyers seeking a characterful, retro-styled car with cheerful appeal, those wanting a convertible option, and drivers prioritising style over practicality.
Not ideal for: Families needing rear-seat space, those requiring a large boot, or buyers seeking a purely practical vehicle without compromise.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Beetle | 3/5 | 3.7/5 | 40.2% | 4.0/5 |
| Fiat 500 | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 42.5% | 4.2/5 |
| MINI Hatch | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.7% | 4.4/5 |
| DS 3 | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 43.7% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Beetle if: You're seeking a characterful, retro-styled car with cheerful appeal, want a convertible option, or prioritise style and charm over practicality.
Consider alternatives if: You need rear-seat space, require a large boot, or are looking for a purely practical vehicle without compromise.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) holds its own in the retro supermini segment, offering distinctive styling and a composed driving experience. Whilst it lags behind rivals like the MINI and Fiat 500 in user ratings and expert scores, it remains a compelling choice for those valuing character and charm. The Beetle's convertible option and efficient diesel engines provide unique advantages, though its cramped rear and modest boot are genuine drawbacks. For budget-conscious buyers seeking a smile-inducing daily driver with retro appeal, the Beetle delivers excellent value and personality.
