Volkswagen Touareg (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Luxurious to travel in | Lacks the brand appeal of a BMW or Audi SUV |
| Good to drive | Uses a lot of fuel |
| Makes for a fine tow car | No seven-seat option |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Touareg (2018-present) is a spacious and luxurious large SUV that sits at the top of the Volkswagen range. Sharing mechanical components with the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, it offers genuine premium pedigree at a more accessible price point. The current third-generation model, refreshed with a mild facelift in late-2023, features an impressive interior with ample room for tall adults, reclining and sliding rear seats, and a cavernous 810-litre boot (655 litres in plug-in hybrid versions). Available with petrol, diesel, or plug-in hybrid powertrains, the range spans from a 3.0-litre V6 diesel to the flagship plug-in hybrid Touareg R with 456bhp and approximately 30 miles of electric range.
The Touareg drives well for its size, with responsive handling and a relaxed, comfortable character suited to long-distance cruising. Engine options are powerful and smooth, though fuel economy is modest at around 25-34mpg depending on the powertrain. As a new car, its premium pricing makes it difficult to recommend over rivals like the Audi Q7 or BMW X5. However, as a used purchase, the Touareg represents excellent value, offering practicality, luxury appointments, and strong towing capability. Running costs are reasonable for the class, with variable service intervals and competitive insurance premiums aligned with premium rivals.
Best for: Buyers seeking a spacious, luxurious large SUV with genuine premium engineering, families requiring ample interior space and boot capacity, and those looking for excellent value on the used market.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising premium brand appeal, buyers needing a seven-seat option, or drivers concerned about fuel consumption.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict
You should buy the Touareg if: You're seeking a spacious, luxurious large SUV with genuine premium engineering, require ample interior space and boot capacity, or are looking for excellent value on the used market.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium brand appeal, need a seven-seat option, or are concerned about fuel consumption.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Touareg (2018-present) is a very practical and feature-packed large SUV that offers excellent value, particularly on the used market. Whilst it shares mechanical components with premium rivals like the Audi Q7, it lacks their brand prestige. The Touareg delivers a luxurious driving experience with responsive handling and powerful engines, though fuel economy is modest. As a new car, its pricing makes it difficult to recommend over the Audi Q7 or BMW X5. However, as a used purchase, the Touareg represents outstanding value for families seeking a spacious, well-appointed SUV with strong towing capability and genuine engineering pedigree. Ensure you compare running costs with more luxurious rivals before purchasing.

5 Overall rating
(1 reviews)The VW Toureg V6 has plenty of pulling power and suits my needs for towing a caravan. To be honest, you dont even know its on the back!! Ive compared like for like, with the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7, they are all based on the same platform, but personally speaking, I like the look of the Toureg. The power of the V6 diesel does put a smile on your face when youre driving it.
