Volkswagen Transporter T6 (2016-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Variety of van, MPV and campervan models to choose from	Exhaust gas recirculation problems with BiTDi engine
Beautifully made interior	More expensive to buy than most rivals
Comfortable ride	Can't match the outright capacity of a Ford Transit Custom

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen Transporter T6 (2016-2024) is a sophisticated and versatile commercial vehicle that transcends the typical workaday van stereotype. With its desirable badge, smart exterior styling, and beautifully constructed interior featuring robust plastics and extensive storage solutions, the T6 offers a premium feel rarely found in the van market. The sixth-generation model provides a wide variety of body shapes, wheelbase lengths, and roof heights, allowing buyers to tailor their vehicle to specific needs. Whether configured as a cargo van, the passenger-focused Caravelle with seven or eight full-size seats, or the utilitarian Shuttle seating up to nine, the T6 delivers exceptional versatility.

Driving dynamics are a standout feature, with composed, predictable, car-like handling and one of the most comfortable suspension setups available in any van. Engine options are predominantly 2.0-litre diesel units ranging from 83bhp to 178bhp, with petrol alternatives and transmission choices including manual and seven-speed DSG automatic. The 2019 facelift introduced the T6.1, bringing electromechanical power steering, advanced safety systems including Crosswind Assist and lane-keeping assist, plus clever features like Trailer Assist. Running costs are reasonable, with efficient models achieving around 35mpg, though fuel economy diminishes with more powerful engines. Servicing costs are competitive, though timing belt replacements cost approximately £400.

Best for: Small business owners seeking a premium, well-built van with sophisticated styling, buyers needing passenger or cargo versatility, and those prioritising comfort and driving dynamics over outright load capacity.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those requiring maximum cargo capacity compared to rivals like the Ford Transit Custom, or users concerned about potential exhaust gas recirculation issues with BiTDi engines.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Transporter T6 if: You're a small business owner seeking a premium, well-built van with sophisticated styling, need passenger or cargo versatility, or prioritise comfort and driving dynamics over outright load capacity.

Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, require maximum cargo capacity, or are concerned about potential exhaust gas recirculation issues with BiTDi engines.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Transporter T6 stands as a premium offering in the mid-size van market, commanding a higher price than most rivals but delivering exceptional build quality, versatility, and driving comfort. Whilst it cannot match the Ford Transit Custom's outright cargo capacity, its beautifully appointed interior, extensive customisation options, and sophisticated handling make it an excellent choice for buyers prioritising quality and refinement. The Vauxhall Vivaro and Mercedes-Benz Vito offer competitive alternatives, but the Transporter's reputation for durability and premium feel justifies its premium positioning for discerning commercial users and those seeking a capable people carrier.
