Volvo S90 (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Ploughs a different furrow from BMW and Mercedes | Not the sportiest of cars |
| Minimalist interior is restrained and elegant | Plug-in hybrid the only option from 2020 onwards |
| Comfortable to drive and be driven in | Infotainment system is a bit fiddly |
Quick Summary
The Volvo S90 (2016-present) is a large premium saloon that takes a distinctly different approach to its German rivals. Rather than pursuing dynamic handling or raw power, Volvo has created an elegant, refined, and beautifully appointed car that prioritises comfort, refinement, and safety. The spacious interior features a minimalist design dominated by a portrait-oriented touchscreen, with high-quality materials throughout. The driving experience is serene and composed, with excellent ride quality and minimal noise intrusion, making it ideal for long-distance cruising. Boot space of 500 litres is respectable, though slightly less than some competitors.
The S90 launched with three trim levels—Momentum, Inscription, and R-Design—though from 2020 this was rationalised to just two. Engine options include 2.0-litre diesel (D4 and D5), petrol (T4 and T5), and a plug-in hybrid (T8). Real-world fuel economy varies depending on engine choice, with diesels achieving around 40-50mpg and petrols closer to 37mpg. Insurance groups range from 27 to 42, and servicing is straightforward with 12-month intervals. Running costs are competitive with rivals, though insurance and servicing for this premium car are not inexpensive.
Best for: Buyers seeking a refined, elegant alternative to German premium saloons; those prioritising comfort and refinement over sportiness; and drivers who value Scandinavian design and safety credentials.
Not ideal for: Enthusiasts wanting dynamic handling or sporty engagement; buyers seeking the most powerful engines in the class; or those frustrated by touchscreen-heavy infotainment systems.

The Verdict
You should buy the S90 if: You seek a refined, elegant alternative to German premium saloons; you prioritise comfort and refinement over sportiness; or you value Scandinavian design and safety credentials.
Consider alternatives if: You want dynamic handling and sporty engagement, desire the most powerful engines in the class, or prefer traditional infotainment systems over touchscreen-heavy interfaces.
Competitive Position: The Volvo S90 (2016-present) occupies a unique position in the premium large saloon market. Whilst the BMW 5 Series edges ahead with superior expert ratings and dynamic handling, and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class offers a more cosseting ride, the S90 carves its own path with elegant Scandinavian design and refined comfort. It offers excellent value compared to its German rivals, with competitive running costs and a more distinctive character. For buyers seeking something different from the conventional German premium formula—a car that prioritises serenity, refinement, and safety—the S90 is a compelling choice that delivers on its promise of understated luxury.

4.9 Overall rating
(8 reviews)I have been patiently waiting for the right executive car at the right price and my list was Mercs E class, BMW 5series, and Audi A6 the Volvo was added to my list much later. I was pleased with the reviews and good value. I made a viewing and test drive appointment on seeing the car on the forecourt I immediately fell for its good looks and excellent features, lovely interiors comfortable seats and good MPG for such large vehicle.
I gave had an S90 D4 R Design for 2 years and have found it overall a very good car, excellent economy and handles well for a big car. I have just swapped it for an Inscription D4 now where normally I would change for another make.
The car looks beautiful I think it is good value I would prefer it to have more power
Purchased this on 2019 plate, it is the d4 190 ps version. I have also in the past owned the Jaguar XF 2.0d, and the BMW 520d. The S90 is up there with them in quality and maybe even surpasses them with kit, does not quite drive like the 520d but not too shabby. I personally think the 520d is starting to look a bit dated now but I am not taking anything away about the way it drives, its still great. Noticing a better mpg from the S90 and as mentioned, more kit than BMW and Jaguar. If you are considering either the BM or the Jag, consider the S90 as well, you may well be surprised.
Car has everything you would wish for comfort and convenience
