Minimalist interior is restrained and elegant	Plug-in hybrid the only option from 2020 onwards
Comfortable to drive and be driven in	Infotainment system is a bit fiddly

Quick Summary

The Volvo S90 (2016-present) is a large premium saloon that competes with the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Audi A6. Launched in 2016 following Volvo's investment in next-generation automotive technology, the S90 offers a spacious interior with exemplary driving position and plentiful legroom for rear passengers. With 500 litres of boot space and high-quality cabin materials, it provides a refined and minimalist environment dominated by a nine-inch touchscreen. The S90 prioritises comfort and refinement over dynamic sportiness, delivering a sedate yet coherent driving experience with excellent ride quality and minimal cabin noise.

Engine options include 2.0-litre diesel (D4 and D5), petrol (T4 and T5), and a plug-in hybrid (T8). Diesel variants achieve up to 50.4mpg officially, whilst petrol engines manage 37.7mpg. The T8 plug-in hybrid offers a 37-mile electric-only range and 141.2mpg official figures, though real-world consumption varies significantly. Insurance groups range from 27 to 42, and servicing intervals are 12 months with flexible payment plans available. The S90 launched with three trims—Momentum, Inscription, and R-Design—later rationalised to two from 2020.

Best for: Buyers seeking a premium, comfortable saloon with elegant design and refined driving experience, those prioritising comfort and technology over sportiness, and drivers wanting an alternative to conventional German rivals.

Not ideal for: Enthusiasts seeking dynamic handling comparable to the BMW 5 Series, buyers on tight budgets, or those requiring lower insurance costs and running expenses.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the S90 if: You seek a premium, comfortable saloon with elegant design and refined driving experience, prioritise comfort and technology over sportiness, or want an alternative to conventional German rivals.

Consider alternatives if: You desire dynamic handling comparable to the BMW 5 Series, are on a tight budget, or require lower insurance costs and running expenses.

Competitive Position: The Volvo S90 (2016-present) is a distinctive competitor in the premium large saloon segment, offering a unique approach that prioritises comfort, refinement, and elegant minimalism over dynamic sportiness. Whilst the BMW 5 Series excels in handling and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class provides traditional luxury, the S90 carves its own path with a beautifully appointed interior, latest technology, and ultimate safety focus. It delivers excellent user satisfaction and represents competitive value, making it an ideal choice for buyers seeking something different from established German marques. The S90 does not aim to be the best in its class dynamically, but rather offers a complete alternative philosophy that appeals to discerning drivers.
