Volvo S90 (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Ploughs a different furrow from BMW and Mercedes | Not the sportiest of cars |
| Minimalist interior is restrained and elegant | Plug-in hybrid the only option from 2020 onwards |
| Comfortable to drive and be driven in | Infotainment system is a bit fiddly |
Quick Summary
The Volvo S90 (2016-present) is a premium large saloon that offers a distinctive alternative to its German rivals. It embodies Volvo's modern design philosophy, focusing on minimalist elegance, exceptional comfort, and class-leading safety. The interior is spacious, beautifully appointed with high-quality materials, and features some of the most comfortable seats in the business. The driving experience prioritises serene, refined progress over the sporty dynamics found in rivals like the BMW 5 Series, making it an outstanding long-distance cruiser.
Initially launched with 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines, the range was later joined by an efficient T8 plug-in hybrid model. Standard equipment is generous across all trims, with even early entry-level models featuring a large nine-inch touchscreen, heated leather seats, and advanced safety technology. While the reliance on the touchscreen for most controls isn't for everyone, the S90 stands out as a sophisticated, comfortable, and uniquely stylish choice in a conservative segment, offering a genuine sense of Scandinavian luxury.
Best for: Drivers prioritising supreme comfort, safety, and a unique, minimalist Scandinavian design over sporty handling.
Not ideal for: Those seeking the sharpest handling and a sporty drive, or buyers who prefer physical controls to a touchscreen-heavy interface.

The Verdict
You should buy the S90 if: You want a premium saloon that excels in comfort, safety, and elegant design, offering a refreshing alternative to the usual German options.
Consider alternatives if: A dynamic, engaging driving experience is your top priority, or you dislike interiors that rely heavily on a central touchscreen.
Competitive Position: The Volvo S90 successfully carves its own niche in the executive saloon market. It competes not by trying to be the sportiest, but by offering a compelling package of refined comfort, top-tier safety, and sophisticated minimalist style. It's a confident and distinct choice for buyers who value serene travel and a sense of well-being over outright performance.

4.9 Overall rating
(8 reviews)I have been patiently waiting for the right executive car at the right price and my list was Mercs E class, BMW 5series, and Audi A6 the Volvo was added to my list much later. I was pleased with the reviews and good value. I made a viewing and test drive appointment on seeing the car on the forecourt I immediately fell for its good looks and excellent features, lovely interiors comfortable seats and good MPG for such large vehicle.
I gave had an S90 D4 R Design for 2 years and have found it overall a very good car, excellent economy and handles well for a big car. I have just swapped it for an Inscription D4 now where normally I would change for another make.
The car looks beautiful I think it is good value I would prefer it to have more power
Purchased this on 2019 plate, it is the d4 190 ps version. I have also in the past owned the Jaguar XF 2.0d, and the BMW 520d. The S90 is up there with them in quality and maybe even surpasses them with kit, does not quite drive like the 520d but not too shabby. I personally think the 520d is starting to look a bit dated now but I am not taking anything away about the way it drives, its still great. Noticing a better mpg from the S90 and as mentioned, more kit than BMW and Jaguar. If you are considering either the BM or the Jag, consider the S90 as well, you may well be surprised.
Car has everything you would wish for comfort and convenience
