The Volkswagen ID. Cross – VW’s smallest electric SUV yet – has been revealed in concept car form. A production version that looks very similar is due on sale in mid-2026, with prices likely to start at about £26,000.

2026 Volkswagen ID. Cross: styling and dimensions
The Volkswagen Group revealed a number of new small electric cars at IAA Mobility (the Munich motor show) in September 2025, all of them based on its new ‘MEB+’ platform. Alongside the Skoda Epiq, Volkswagen ID. Polo and Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI was this – the Volkswagen ID. Cross Concept. And in production form it could end up being the biggest seller of the lot.
Unlike some concept cars, the ID. Cross Concept looks almost ready to hit the showroom. Apart from a few fanciful details that aren’t likely to make the cut, this is pretty much how we expect the production version of the ID. Cross will look.
Volkswagen says the ID. Cross exemplifies its new ‘Pure Positive’ design language, which is all about ‘visual stability and a positive, likeable vehicle personality’. The front of the ID. Cross is deliberately face-like as a result, and designed to give the impression that the car is smiling. VW also points to the thick C-pillars and completely straight window line as characteristics of the brand.
At just over 4.1 metres long, the ID. Cross is about the same length as the VW T-Cross – the brand’s smallest SUV. It’s slightly longer than the closely-related Skoda Epiq and has very similar dimensions to the Renault 4 E-Tech – one of its key rivals.
2026 Volkswagen ID. Cross: interior design and practicality
Volkswagen describes the ID. Cross’ interior as an ‘oasis with a lounge-style ambience’ and it certainly has a wholesome, relaxed vibe. There are lots of fabric-covered surfaces, a ‘Vanilla Chai’ colour scheme and a restrained, tasteful look throughout. How much of this will make production remains to be seen, though, since we’re not sure how well some of the materials would stand up to hard use.
The layout is likely to be carried over, however, and the good news is that Volkswagen has listened to customer feedback over the past couple of years and tried to make everything a bit more user-friendly. There are individual electric window switches, for example, as well as a row of physical buttons beneath the centre console.
Boot capacity for the ID. Cross is 450 litres – not as much as you get with the Ford Puma Gen-E but 30 litres more than the Renault 4 E-Tech offers and there's a 25-litres frunk under the bonnet. All of the seats in the concept car can be folded down to create a camper-style double bed but VW hasn’t confirmed whether this functionality is likely to make the production car.
2026 Volkswagen ID. Cross: engines and driving dynamics
VW hasn’t provided much technical detail other than to say that the ID.Cross uses a 208bhp electric motor to drive the front wheels. Maximum battery range is 261 miles, which tops the Ford Puma Gen-E and Renault 4 E-Tech and is just three miles shy of the closely-related Skoda Epiq.
2026 Volkswagen ID. Cross: price and release date
The Volkswagen Group has been at pains to point out that its new wave of small electric cars will be affordable, with prices similar to petrol-engined equivalents. Given that the VW T-Cross has a starting price of £25,425, we expect list prices for the ID. Cross will start at about £26,000 when it goes on sale in summer 2026.
