The Octavia feels composed and secure on the road, with light steering that makes it easy to manoeuvre in town and stable on the motorway. It strikes a great balance between a comfortable ride and tidy handling.
The Superb is unashamedly geared towards comfort. It’s a brilliant long-distance cruiser, with soft suspension that soaks up bumps and a quiet cabin that makes motorway journeys feel effortless. It’s not as agile as the Octavia on a twisty road and its sheer size can make it feel a little cumbersome on tight city streets, but for devouring miles in comfort, it’s hard to fault.

Both cars come with a good level of modern technology as standard. The Octavia features a digital driver’s display and a central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s a clean, minimalist layout, but the reliance on the touchscreen for functions like climate control can be a bit distracting to use on the move.
This is where the newer Superb pulls ahead. While it also features a large central screen (up to 13 inches), it introduces Skoda’s new ‘Smart Dials’. These are three physical rotary dials below the screen that have small digital displays within them, allowing you to control everything from cabin temperature to sat-nav zoom with a simple twist and push. It’s a clever, intuitive system that’s much easier to use than the Octavia’s touch-only setup, giving the Superb a clear advantage.

This is a traditional Skoda strength, and the Octavia is a star performer. Its range of petrol and diesel engines is efficient, with the 1.5-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel being particularly frugal choices. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version offers a useful electric range for low-cost commuting and attracts low company car tax rates. Combined with a lower purchase price, the Octavia is an affordable car to run.
The Superb is also efficient for such a large car, sharing many of the same engines as the Octavia. The latest PHEV model even boasts a much longer electric-only range of over 60 miles. However, its higher list price and slightly heavier fuel consumption due to its extra size and weight mean it will inevitably cost a little more to buy and run day-to-day than its smaller sibling.

This is an incredibly close contest between two of the most sensible and spacious cars on sale. Both the Octavia and the Superb are brilliant at what they do, offering huge practicality, comfort, and value for money. It’s a testament to Skoda that the biggest rival to one of its cars is often another.
However, a winner must be chosen, and based on our comprehensive CarGurus ratings, it’s the Skoda Octavia that takes the narrow victory. It manages to pack in most of the Superb’s practicality and quality into a more affordable and efficient package. For many families, the Octavia's space is more than enough, and its lower running costs and more manageable size make it the smarter all-round choice.
That’s not to say the Superb isn’t a worthy contender. If you absolutely must have the most passenger space possible, or you’re swayed by its more advanced interior tech and supreme long-distance comfort, it is a fantastic car that feels more premium than its price suggests. But for hitting the absolute sweet spot of space, cost, and usability, the Skoda Octavia is the winner here.
