Overview
The Volkswagen Polo GTI is the sportiest version of the German firm's popular supermini. The first Polo GTI appeared on the third-generation of the car in limited-run format, but was only offered in other parts of Europe, not in the UK. There was no GTI variant of the Mk4 Polo, either, so our first sniff of the Polo GTI came with the Mk5 Polo in 2010. It came with a 1.4-litre petrol engine that was both turbocharged and supercharged to give 180 horsepower. An extensive refresh in 2015 saw this engine swapped for a 1.8 turbo with 190 horsepower. The GTI version of the Mk6 Polo arrived in 2018 with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. It originally had 200 horsepower, and this was increased to 207 horsepower during a 2022 facelift. All versions of the Polo GTI are capable, but are rather less exciting to drive than their rivals.
