Unless you opt for one of the rather pricey big-engined AMG models, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class displays little in the way of sporting ambitions – in contrast to rivals from the likes of Audi, BMW and Jaguar. That means the Mercedes can focus more completely on delivering luxurious comfort. It’s also largely reliable, and its styling is pleasingly understated – although there’s no mistaking the cachet that the large three-pointed star on the bonnet offers when it comes to impressing the neighbours. As well as a four-door saloon, it’s also available as an extremely versatile estate, a swish coupe and even as a soft-top.
