Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Serene and soothing comfort | Expensive for private buyers |
| Broad range of engine options | Bewildering array of trims and options |
| Traditional feel with high-tech equipment | E450 d is astonishingly expensive |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a traditional executive saloon that sits between the smaller C-Class and larger S-Class limousine. This 2025 model distinguishes itself through an impressively varied engine range, including petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid options—a flexibility its BMW 5 Series rival cannot match. The E-Class offers serene, soothing comfort with a sophisticated blend of understated quality and cutting-edge technology, including the optional MBUX Superscreen. Boot space is reasonable at 370 litres for the hybrid saloon and 460 litres for the hybrid estate, with non-hybrid versions offering 540 and 615 litres respectively.
As a company car, the plug-in hybrid E-Class models make excellent sense, delivering electric-only range of around 70 miles and low official CO2 emissions from just 12g/km, resulting in minimal Benefit-in-Kind tax. For private buyers, however, high list prices mean the PHEVs are less compelling; a regular mild-hybrid petrol or diesel model offers better value. The E-Class prioritises comfort and grandeur over sporty handling, making it ideal for those seeking a refined, long-distance cruiser rather than an engaging drive. Running costs are competitive, with electric charging as low as 4p per mile on favourable tariffs.
Best for: Company car users seeking low tax costs, drivers prioritising comfort and refinement over sporting dynamics, and those wanting a broad choice of engine options including diesel and hybrid powertrains.
Not ideal for: Private buyers on a tight budget, those seeking sporty handling comparable to the BMW 5 Series, or buyers wanting a straightforward trim structure without overwhelming options complexity.

The Verdict
You should buy the E-Class if: You're a company car user seeking low tax costs, prioritise comfort and refinement over sporting dynamics, or want a broad choice of engine options including diesel and hybrid powertrains.
Consider alternatives if: You're a private buyer on a tight budget, seeking sporty handling comparable to the BMW 5 Series, or want a straightforward trim structure without overwhelming options complexity.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a compelling executive saloon that differentiates itself through an impressively varied engine range—petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid options—which rivals like the BMW 5 Series cannot match. Whilst the BMW edges ahead on sporty handling and the Audi A6 offers slightly better value, the E-Class excels in delivering serene comfort, traditional elegance, and cutting-edge technology. For company car users, the plug-in hybrid variants are particularly attractive, offering minimal Benefit-in-Kind tax and genuine electric-only capability. Private buyers may find the high list prices challenging, but those prioritising refinement and engine choice will find the E-Class a highly rewarding proposition.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is celebrated for its combination of luxurious comfort, impressive performance, and sleek style. Owners have consistently praised its smooth rides, powerful engines, and excellent fuel economy across various model years. Many appreciate the vehicle's high-quality interior and cutting-edge technology, though some drivers feel overwhelmed by the extensive features available. Overall, the E-Class is noted as a reliable and stylish choice, although a few have mentioned concerns about fuel mileage in earlier models.

What people say
Nice specification with panoramic roof and Burmester sound system, and the mileage is lower than average. However, the vehicle appears to have partial leather rather than full Nappa leather, which is often expected on Premium Plus models. Considering similar 2018–2019 E-Class Coupes currently advertised in the £18,000–£19,000 range, the price still feels slightly high. Overall a good car, but not necessarily the best value compared with other options on the market.
The car drives just as it should and I am glad I got it
The car is an E240, petrol, 2.6 6 litre Auto. Great looking car for its age, beautiful profile. Interior is classically designed, and no cup holders...I dont think they were thought of back then. Quality leather, nice unassuming wood trim, comfortable seats, and as an auto gears have seamless shift. It feels superbly put together, everything is solid, quality plastics too. Huge boot. Lovely to drive, smooth, quiet. Had it 5 years, enjoyed every minute of my ownership. New in 2005 it was £33,000, I bought it for £4000....you get an awful lot of car for that. Highly recommended.
Probably the best Mercedes in all it’s classes, not too small and not to big; just perfect.
This is an amazingly smooth and quiet ride with plenty of power when needed, but great on fuel also.
