Abarth 595 (2012-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Strong performance | Unforgiving ride |
| Direct, involving handling | Cramped rear seats and boot |
| Soft-top option for wind-in-hair driving | Jerky automatic gearbox |
Quick Summary
The Abarth 595 is a fashionable and exciting hot hatch that combines the cute, funky looks of the Fiat 500 with a more potent turbocharged engine. Available as the 595 with 163bhp or the 695 with 178bhp, both powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged unit, this car delivers nimble handling and gutsy performance. The standard 595 manual reaches 62mph in 7.3 seconds, whilst the 695 achieves this in 6.7 seconds. However, the Abarth prioritises style and fun over practicality, with cramped rear seats offering less room than rivals and a modest 185-litre boot.
Ride quality is a notable weakness, with even base models feeling bumpy and higher-performance variants proving uncomfortable for daily use. The car is also quite noisy and less economical than expected, typically achieving around 40mpg or less. Servicing intervals are more frequent than many competitors, and timing belt replacement every five years or 75,000 miles adds to running costs. For those seeking a more well-rounded hot hatch that's easier to live with daily, particularly if carrying children or luggage, alternatives like the Suzuki Swift Sport or Ford Fiesta ST offer superior practicality and value.
Best for: Buyers prioritising style and fun, those seeking an affordable hot hatch with distinctive looks, and drivers who don't need rear-seat space or a large boot.
Not ideal for: Families with young children, those requiring spacious rear seats or boot capacity, or drivers seeking a comfortable daily driver with a smooth ride.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Abarth 595 | 2/5 | 4.8/5 | 41.5% | 3.9/5 |
| Ford Fiesta ST | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.7% | 4.4/5 |
| MINI Cooper | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 35.9% | 4.4/5 |
| Volkswagen Up GTI | 4/5 | 3.8/5 | 32.6% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Abarth 595 if: You prioritise style and fun, seek an affordable hot hatch with distinctive looks, or don't need rear-seat space or a large boot.
Consider alternatives if: You require spacious rear seats or boot capacity, need a comfortable daily driver with a smooth ride, or are carrying young children regularly.
Competitive Position: The Abarth 595 is a stylish and fun hot hatch that stands out from the crowd with its distinctive design and engaging performance. However, it lags behind rivals like the Ford Fiesta ST and MINI Cooper in overall practicality and daily usability. Whilst users rate it highly at 4.8 out of 5, the expert rating of 2 out of 5 reflects its compromises in comfort, space, and running costs. For buyers willing to sacrifice practicality for style and character, the Abarth 595 delivers an affordable and entertaining package. Those seeking a more well-rounded hot hatch should consider the superior practicality and value offered by the Ford Fiesta ST.

4.8 Overall rating
(8 reviews)stunning performance.looks and good fuel consumption. superb all round vision and adaptive steering is fantastic. smooth ride with amazing acceleration. great city car coupled with superb motorway/long haul driving, better value car than a mini cooper.
Absolutely love everything about this car, sporty, comfortable and fun to drive!!
Got lots of extras and a good looking body with no stickers over it.Drives really smooth and accelerates faster than my volvo did. Cant compare it to anything new now but perhaps the old mini Cooper s of the 60s/70s.
Great value pocket rocket that’s fun to drive and economical. The driving position could be better but you soon forget that after a few minutes of smiling as you listen to that exhaust note and enjoy the kart like driving experience.
Great little run about, good fun and well built
