Abarth 595 (2012-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Strong performance | Unforgiving ride |
| Direct, involving handling | Cramped rear seats and boot |
| Soft-top option for wind-in-hair driving | Jerky automatic gearbox |
Quick Summary
The Abarth 595 (2012-present) takes the fashionable looks of the Fiat 500 and injects a potent, exciting driving experience. Available in various versions, now slimmed down to the 595 and 695, both are powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine, offering 163bhp or 178bhp respectively. While it's fun and funky, practicality is limited, with less rear seat room and a modest 185-litre boot compared to rivals.
Whichever Abarth you choose, you get a nimble car with a gutsy engine that loves to be thrashed, with the standard 595 hitting 62mph in 7.3 seconds. However, the ride quality can be bumpy and uncomfortable, and all versions are quite noisy, making daily driving potentially tiresome. Running costs are not as economical as expected for its size, with even the entry-level version achieving little more than 40mpg. Servicing intervals are more frequent than some rivals, and a timing belt replacement is needed every five years or 75,000 miles.
Best for: Drivers wanting a fashionable, exciting, and fun little hot hatch.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising practicality (rear space, boot), ride comfort, quietness, or those needing lower running costs.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Abarth 595 | 2/5 | 4.8/5 | 32.0% | 3.9/5 |
| Ford Fiesta | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 33.2% | 4.4/5 |
| MINI Cooper | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.1% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Abarth 595 if: You're looking for a fashionable, exciting, and fun hot hatch with strong performance and direct handling.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise practicality (rear seats, boot space), a comfortable ride, quietness, or need lower running costs.
Competitive Position: The Abarth 595 offers a unique blend of style and performance in the hot hatch segment. While it excels in delivering an exhilarating driving experience and has a distinctive look, its compromises in practicality, ride comfort, and potentially higher running costs mean it's not the most well-rounded option. Rivals like the Ford Fiesta ST and MINI Cooper might offer a more balanced package for daily usability, but the Abarth 595 remains a strong choice for those seeking character and driving thrills above all else.

4.8 Overall rating
(8 reviews)stunning performance.looks and good fuel consumption. superb all round vision and adaptive steering is fantastic. smooth ride with amazing acceleration. great city car coupled with superb motorway/long haul driving, better value car than a mini cooper.
Absolutely love everything about this car, sporty, comfortable and fun to drive!!
Got lots of extras and a good looking body with no stickers over it.Drives really smooth and accelerates faster than my volvo did. Cant compare it to anything new now but perhaps the old mini Cooper s of the 60s/70s.
Great value pocket rocket that’s fun to drive and economical. The driving position could be better but you soon forget that after a few minutes of smiling as you listen to that exhaust note and enjoy the kart like driving experience.
Great little run about, good fun and well built
