Alfa Romeo Giulia (2016-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very attractive styling	Not as comfortable or refined as German rivals
Ferocious performance from Quadrifoglio	Some owners report electrical gremlins
Emotional appeal of the Alfa badge	No estate version

Quick Summary

The Alfa Romeo Giulia (2016-present) is a distinctive Italian saloon that stands apart from the conventional German executive car crowd. Whilst it may not match rivals like the Audi A4 for interior quality or the BMW 3 Series for refinement, the Giulia compensates with imaginative design, an excellent driving position, and generous interior space. The 2019 facelift brought significant improvements, including an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and a 7.0-inch TFT instrument display, later upgraded to 12.3 inches.

The Giulia offers a compelling blend of performance and economy across its engine range, from efficient 2.2-litre diesels to turbocharged 2.0-litre petrols and the extraordinary 503bhp Quadrifoglio. All models feature a smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Whilst the standard suspension can feel firm on UK roads, the optional adaptive suspension provides a more compliant ride. Running costs are reasonable, with diesel engines returning over 50mpg and petrol models achieving mid-30s figures. The Giulia's emotional appeal, striking aesthetics, and exceptional value for money make it a compelling alternative to its German counterparts, despite some compromises in comfort and refinement.

Best for: Buyers seeking a distinctive, stylish executive saloon with emotional appeal, those prioritising performance and engaging driving dynamics, and drivers wanting excellent value compared to German rivals.

Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum comfort and refinement, buyers needing an estate car option, or drivers concerned about potential electrical issues.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Giulia if: You seek a distinctive, stylish executive saloon with emotional appeal, prioritise performance and engaging driving dynamics, or want exceptional value compared to German rivals.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum comfort and refinement, need an estate car option, or are concerned about potential electrical issues.

Competitive Position: The Alfa Romeo Giulia (2016-present) is a compelling alternative in the executive saloon segment, offering striking Italian design and engaging performance that rivals struggle to match emotionally. Whilst the BMW 3 Series edges ahead on overall refinement and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4 offer superior interior quality, the Giulia's imaginative styling, ferocious Quadrifoglio variant, and exceptional value proposition make it an intoxicating choice for discerning buyers willing to embrace a more characterful alternative to the German establishment.
