Alfa Romeo Tonale (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Stylish good looks set it apart	Quite cramped in the back seats
Agile and sporty to drive	Plug-in hybrid has a smaller boot
Good boot space in mild hybrid versions	Mainstream rivals offer similar space and tech for less money

Quick Summary

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is a small family SUV that sits below the larger Stelvio in the Alfa Romeo range, competing with premium compact models like the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Volvo XC40. The 2026 update brings a sharper, more sculpted design with a revised grille and new air intakes, alongside mechanical improvements designed to enhance driving engagement. The engine line-up has been revised to meet latest emissions standards, with the 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol now producing 173bhp, whilst the four-wheel-drive 1.3-litre plug-in hybrid offers either 187bhp or 266bhp with improved software for smoother electric-to-petrol transitions.

The Tonale manages the admirable trick of feeling different in a crowded class, with a touch more agility in its handling than many family SUVs whilst still offering decent ride comfort and generous equipment across the range. The mild-hybrid version offers a competitive 500 litres of boot space, though the plug-in hybrid reduces this to 385 litres. Rear passenger space trails some rivals, and neither hybrid option feels especially punchy, but if you're drawn to smart styling and Italian flair, the Tonale is worth considering. Running costs are competitive for the class, with mild-hybrid versions achieving around 40mpg in real-world driving, whilst the plug-in hybrid can deliver approximately 40 miles of electric range if charged regularly.

Best for: Buyers seeking a distinctive premium compact SUV with engaging handling, stylish design and modern technology, particularly those who value Italian character over mainstream alternatives.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum rear passenger space or outright practicality, or buyers seeking the most punchy performance or lowest running costs in the segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Tonale if: You're seeking a distinctive premium compact SUV with engaging handling, stylish design and modern technology, particularly if you value Italian character over mainstream alternatives.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum rear passenger space or outright practicality, or you're seeking the most punchy performance or lowest running costs in the segment.

Competitive Position: The Alfa Romeo Tonale holds its own in the competitive premium compact SUV segment, offering distinctive styling and engaging handling that sets it apart from more conventional rivals. Whilst it trails the Volvo XC40 and BMW X1 in overall CarGurus ratings and user satisfaction, it competes well on design and driving dynamics. The Tonale's appeal lies in its Italian character and sporty positioning rather than outright practicality or value, making it an excellent choice for buyers willing to pay a premium for something a little different.
