Audi A4 (2008-2015) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Understated looks have aged well	Awkward pedal position in manual cars
Elegant, high-quality cabin	Some reliability problems to contend with
Fuel-sipping economy of diesel models	Not as practical as a VW Passat

Quick Summary

The Audi A4 (2008-2015), known as the B8, is a sophisticated compact executive car that competes directly with the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Available in saloon and Avant estate body styles, it offers a roomy, elegantly finished cabin with high-quality materials and excellent build quality. The A4 provides 480 litres of boot space in saloon form (962 litres with rear seats folded), whilst the Avant offers 490 litres standard (1,430 litres with seats down). The understated design has aged remarkably well, and the car delivers a refined, upmarket driving experience suitable for families and business users alike.

The engine range is impressively broad, with efficient 2.0-litre TDI diesels returning up to 67.3mpg, whilst petrol options range from a modest 1.8-litre to powerful six-cylinder variants. The 2.0 TDI Ultra and TDIe models offer exceptional economy and low emissions. Quattro four-wheel-drive is available for enhanced performance in all weathers. Running costs are reasonable for an executive car, with insurance starting from group 19 and servicing available at competitive VW Group dealerships. However, some reliability concerns and the awkward pedal position in manual gearbox models are notable drawbacks.

Best for: Buyers seeking a refined, spacious executive car with excellent build quality, those prioritising fuel economy through diesel engines, and families wanting a capable estate car (Avant).

Not ideal for: Keen drivers seeking the handling of a BMW 3 Series, those with manual gearboxes concerned about pedal positioning, or buyers prioritising maximum practicality over premium appeal.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the A4 if: You seek a refined, spacious executive car with excellent build quality, prioritise fuel economy through diesel engines, or want a capable estate car (Avant) for family use.

Consider alternatives if: You are a keen driver seeking superior handling, concerned about pedal positioning in manual cars, or require maximum practicality over premium appeal.

Competitive Position: The Audi A4 (2008-2015) is a strong contender in the compact executive car segment, offering refinement, quality, and efficiency that rivals the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Whilst it may not match the BMW's engaging driving dynamics, the A4 excels in cabin quality, understated design, and diesel economy. Its broad engine range and availability as an Avant estate make it versatile for different needs. Some reliability concerns and the manual gearbox pedal issue are drawbacks, but overall it represents a compelling choice for those prioritising comfort and sophistication over outright sportiness.
