Audi A4 (2008-2015) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Understated looks have aged well | Awkward pedal position in manual cars |
| Elegant, high-quality cabin | Some reliability problems to contend with |
| Fuel-sipping economy of diesel models | Not as practical as a VW Passat |
Quick Summary
The fourth-generation Audi A4 (B8, 2008-2015) marked a significant improvement over its predecessor, offering a roomier, cleaner, and more aerodynamic design in both saloon and Avant (estate) body styles. Competing directly with the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class, its cabin stands out with an elegant, high-quality finish and excellent build. It provides ample space for front and rear passengers, with the saloon offering 480 litres of boot space and the Avant 490 litres, expanding to 1,430 litres with seats folded.
While not matching the BMW 3 Series for agility, the A4 handles neatly and holds its own against rivals. The engine range is diverse, with popular 2.0-litre TDI diesels offering impressive economy (TDIe and Ultra models achieving over 60mpg officially) and capable petrol options like the 1.8 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI. Equipment levels are good, with SE, S Line, SE Technik, Black Edition, and Allroad trims providing features from digital radio and climate control to satellite navigation and Xenon headlights. Running costs are reasonable, particularly for diesel models, and it achieved a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.
Best for: Drivers seeking an elegant, high-quality cabin, good practicality (especially the Avant), fuel-efficient diesel models, or a capable family car with understated style.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising ultimate agility (like a BMW 3 Series), those sensitive to an awkward pedal position in manual cars, or those needing maximum luggage space (like a VW Passat).
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Audi A4 | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 34.0% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW 3 Series | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 36.2% | 4.4/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz C-Class | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 35.9% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the A4 if: You value an elegant, high-quality cabin, need good practicality (especially the Avant estate), appreciate fuel-efficient diesel options, or are looking for a capable family car with understated style.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise ultimate driving agility, are sensitive to the offset pedal position in manual cars, or require maximum luggage space beyond what the A4 offers (e.g., VW Passat).
Competitive Position: The Audi A4 (2008-2015) is a strong contender in the compact executive car market, offering a beautifully finished and roomy interior, understated but upmarket style, and a broad choice of engines, particularly economical diesels. While it may not match the BMW 3 Series for driver engagement or the VW Passat for ultimate practicality, its blend of quality, comfort, and efficiency makes it a highly appealing choice for families and commuters. The availability of quattro four-wheel-drive further enhances its appeal in all weather conditions.

(12 reviews)Amazing performance i highly recommend this car for everyone
The cars are really nice it’s just some are just over priced especially with higher miles
I have always loved Audi cars and I think you got a good collection of cars to make a good choice from. Sometimes there are misrepresentations on some cars. you find that the car is manual whereas the details given do not much the pictures of the car. Just something to be mindful of other than that you are excellent
Good car but a lot of work have to be done on it
I think the black addition just look right and has a good spec
