Audi A5 (2024-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Tech-focused interior	Not as sharp to drive as a BMW 3 Series
Wide range of powertrains including diesel	Digital displays might prove overwhelming
Covers long distances with ease	Too many functions rely on touchscreen

Quick Summary

The Audi A5 (2024-present) is a premium family car that takes over the role of the previous A4, offering a practical hatchback configuration rather than a traditional saloon. Available with petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, it delivers an impressive blend of performance and efficiency. The diesel variant with MHEV Plus mild hybrid technology is particularly impressive, achieving close to 50mpg in real-world driving and offering a 615-mile range from a full tank. The hatchback design provides excellent boot access with 445 litres of space, whilst the cabin feels appropriately premium with high-quality materials and solid build quality throughout.

The A5 strikes an impressive balance between comfort and control, excelling as a long-distance cruiser with neat and precise handling. The interior is dominated by screens—an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.5-inch central touchscreen—which offer excellent graphics and processing speed, though the reliance on touch controls can be distracting. Entry-level models start around £45,000, with strong residual values and competitive running costs helping offset the initial purchase price. However, all A5s exceed £40,000, meaning owners will pay the expensive car supplement of VED for years two to six of ownership.

Best for: Buyers seeking a premium family car with excellent refinement, smart technology, and capable performance; high-mileage drivers valuing diesel efficiency; those prioritising long-distance comfort and practicality.

Not ideal for: Drivers wanting the sharpest handling dynamics; those preferring traditional physical controls over touchscreens; budget-conscious buyers, as all models exceed £40,000.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the A5 if: You're seeking a premium family car with excellent refinement, smart technology, and capable performance; you're a high-mileage driver valuing diesel efficiency; or you prioritise long-distance comfort and practicality.

Consider alternatives if: You want the sharpest handling dynamics, prefer traditional physical controls over touchscreens, or are budget-conscious, as all models exceed £40,000.

Competitive Position: The Audi A5 successfully continues the A4's legacy whilst adding its own distinct character. The hatchback configuration offers practical advantages over traditional saloon rivals, whilst the diesel powertrain with clever mild hybrid technology delivers an impressive blend of performance and efficiency. Whilst the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series edge ahead in handling dynamics and user ratings, the A5 holds its own with superior practicality and a compelling range of powertrains. The Mercedes C-Class offers similar appeal but with slightly lower user satisfaction. For buyers prioritising long-distance comfort, technology, and versatility over outright driving excitement, the A5 makes a compelling case for itself.
