Audi Q8 (2018-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Outlandish looks and huge presence	Very expensive to buy
Fabulous cabin quality	Audi doesn't usually perform well in reliability surveys
Satisfying to travel in for both the driver and their passengers	An Audi Q7 is the more practical, rational buy

Quick Summary

The Audi Q8 (2018-present) is an outlandish, high-performance luxury SUV that commands attention with its imposing dimensions and striking design. Beneath its gangsta rap exterior lies a cultured, beautifully appointed cabin featuring fine-grade leathers, brushed aluminium veneers, and ambient lighting. Despite its substantial 2.4-tonne mass, the Q8's height-adjustable air suspension and adaptive dampers deliver impressive handling composure, whilst the range of potent engines—including a 3.0-litre V6 petrol, plug-in hybrid, and diesel options—ensures compelling performance. The SQ8 variant offers an obscenely powerful 507bhp 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol engine for those seeking ultimate thrills.

The Q8 excels as a luxurious long-distance grand tourer, offering a 605-litre boot, spacious rear seating, and a vault-like cabin that isolates occupants from external noise and vibration. Running costs reflect its premium positioning, with the 50 TDI diesel achieving 33.2mpg and the 55 TFSI petrol managing 26.4mpg. Insurance premiums are substantial, with Group 50 for the SQ8, and annual tax stands at £475 for the first five years. Resale values are modest, retaining approximately 30% of original value after three years, though significant price variations exist between similar examples.

Best for: Luxury-focused buyers seeking a statement-making SUV with exceptional cabin quality, long-distance comfort, and impressive performance credentials.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising reliability, or those seeking maximum practicality (the Q7 offers more space and seven seats).

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Q8 if: You prioritise luxury, cabin quality, and a statement-making presence, and you're willing to pay premium prices for long-distance comfort and performance.

Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, prioritise reliability, or require maximum practicality and seven-seat capability.

Competitive Position: The Audi Q8 (2018-present) holds its own in the luxury SUV segment, though it faces stiff competition from the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and Range Rover Sport, both of which achieve higher overall CarGurus ratings (4.4/5 versus 4.0/5). The Range Rover Sport particularly impresses with a 4.7/5 user rating, whilst the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class offers better value proposition at 36.7% good/great deals. The Q8 excels in design drama and cabin execution, but potential buyers should weigh its premium pricing, modest resale values, and reliability concerns against these rivals' proven track records and stronger user satisfaction scores.
