Audi S3 (2013-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Four-wheel drive delivers strong performance in all weathers	Not as much fun as a BMW M140i
Available in a choice of bodystyles	Convertibles are harder to track down than other models
Modest running costs for such a quick car	High servicing costs at franchised dealers

Quick Summary

The Audi S3 (2013-2020) is an upmarket high-performance compact car available in multiple body styles: three-door hatch, five-door Sportback, four-door Saloon, and Cabriolet. Powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 300hp, it channels power through Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system. With sub-five-second 0-62mph acceleration and claimed average economy around 40mpg, the S3 combines impressive performance with practicality. Boot space of 325 litres (or 390 litres in the Saloon) rivals mainstream family cars, whilst the interior is spacious and well-appointed with premium materials and technology often found in larger vehicles.

The S3 prioritises effortless high-speed performance, stability, and all-weather capability over outright handling engagement. Its steering lacks tactile feedback compared to some rivals, but the all-wheel-drive system, powerful brakes, and traction control make it composed and easy to drive quickly. Real-world fuel consumption typically averages around 30mpg, allowing 350+ miles per tank. A 2016 facelift modernised the design and equipment whilst boosting performance slightly. Depreciation is well-supported by desirability, and Audi Approved Used cars offer comprehensive warranties and roadside assistance, making ownership straightforward and sensible.

Best for: Buyers seeking a quick, practical, and safe performance car available in multiple body styles, those prioritising all-weather capability, and drivers wanting premium quality without sacrificing practicality.

Not ideal for: Enthusiasts seeking ultimate handling and driving engagement, those wanting lower servicing costs at franchised dealers, or buyers specifically seeking a convertible (limited availability).

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the S3 if: You want a quick, practical, and safe performance car available in multiple body styles, prioritise all-weather capability, or seek premium quality without sacrificing practicality.

Consider alternatives if: You're seeking ultimate handling and driving engagement, want lower servicing costs at franchised dealers, or specifically need a convertible with good availability.

Competitive Position: The Audi S3 (2013-2020) is a compelling choice in the compact performance car segment, offering a unique blend of speed, practicality, and premium quality. Whilst it lacks the outright handling engagement of rivals like the BMW M140i, its four-wheel-drive system, multiple body styles, and modest running costs make it exceptionally versatile. The S3 outperforms the Mercedes-Benz A-Class in user ratings and overall appeal, whilst matching the Volkswagen Golf R and Seat Leon in expert ratings. For buyers prioritising all-season capability, interior space, and premium refinement over pure driving thrills, the S3 represents an excellent and sensible choice.
