BMW 6 Series (2011-2017) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Successfully blends performance and refinement	Coupe and convertible are cramped in the back
Staggering performance of the M6	Not as agile as a Porsche 911
Choice of body styles to suit different priorities	Budget for a big bill if a major part fails

Quick Summary

The BMW 6 Series (2011-2017), the third generation of this upmarket grand tourer, offers stylish looks, an elegant interior, and impressive performance credentials. Available in convertible, coupe, and four-door Gran Coupe body styles, it successfully blends performance with refinement. The entry-level 640i features a 315bhp turbocharged straight-six engine, whilst the 650i offers a potent 401bhp twin-turbocharged V8. The diesel 640d, however, strikes the best balance for many buyers, delivering 309bhp with claimed economy of 51.4mpg and real-world figures around 40mpg, making it the most sensible choice for long-distance driving.

The 6 Series is loaded with standard equipment including Dakota leather, an eight-speed automatic transmission, satnav, xenon headlights, parking sensors, and dual-zone climate control. Whilst it excels at soaking up miles with ease and refinement, it's best treated as a 2+2 in coupe and convertible forms, so the Gran Coupe is preferable for regular four-seat use. Running costs can be substantial, particularly for petrol variants and the high-performance M6, with significant VED charges for post-April 2017 registrations. However, for those seeking a premium, refined grand tourer rather than a sports car, the 6 Series is an excellent choice.

Best for: Buyers seeking a premium grand tourer with performance and refinement, those prioritising long-distance comfort, and drivers wanting multiple body style options (convertible, coupe, or Gran Coupe).

Not ideal for: Those requiring comfortable four-seat accommodation in coupe or convertible forms, drivers seeking agile, engaging handling comparable to a Porsche 911, or budget-conscious buyers concerned about repair costs and fuel consumption on petrol variants.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 6 Series if: You're seeking a premium grand tourer with excellent performance and refinement, prioritising long-distance comfort, or wanting multiple body style options including convertible, coupe, or Gran Coupe variants.

Consider alternatives if: You require comfortable four-seat accommodation in coupe or convertible forms, desire agile and engaging handling comparable to a Porsche 911, or are concerned about repair costs and fuel consumption on petrol variants.

Competitive Position: The BMW 6 Series (2011-2017) is a compelling choice in the premium grand tourer segment, offering a successful blend of performance, refinement, and style. Whilst the Porsche 911 delivers superior agility and engagement, the 6 Series excels at combining comfort with capability, particularly in diesel form. Its multiple body styles provide flexibility that rivals cannot match. However, buyers must be prepared for substantial running costs, particularly on petrol variants and the M6, and potential repair bills on complex luxury components. For those prioritising refined, long-distance cruising over outright sporting thrills, the 6 Series represents an excellent and sophisticated choice.
