BMW 6 Series (2003-2010) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Effortless performance, whichever engine you choose	Unconventional looks put some buyers off
SE models offer the most comfortable ride	The V8s are thirsty and potentially troublesome
Entertaining to drive	Cramped rear seats

Quick Summary

The BMW 6 Series (2003-2010), known as the E63 Coupé and E64 Convertible, is a luxurious grand tourer offering effortless performance and engaging driving dynamics. Based on the acclaimed E60 5 Series platform but with a shorter wheelbase, the 6 Series delivers impeccable handling with BMW's trademark rear-wheel drive balance. Engine options range from the economical 630i and efficient 635d diesel to the glorious 645i and 650i V8s, culminating in the sensational 500bhp V10-powered M6. All models provide excellent real-world performance, with the diesel offering serious torque and reasonable running costs compared to the petrol variants.

Practicality is reasonable for a grand tourer, with spacious front seats, a 450-litre boot in the coupé, and comfortable long-distance capability. However, rear-seat space is cramped, and running costs can be substantial, particularly for V8 and M6 models. Insurance premiums are costly across the range, and servicing through franchised dealerships is expensive, though independent specialists offer better value. The unconventional styling divides opinion, but those who appreciate the 6 Series will find a tremendously rewarding car to drive. With careful shopping, used examples represent excellent value for luxury and performance enthusiasts.

Best for: Drivers seeking luxury, performance, and engaging driving dynamics; those wanting a practical grand tourer; and buyers looking for high-performance thrills at used car prices.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers concerned about running costs; those prioritising conventional styling; or drivers needing spacious rear seating.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 6 Series if: You seek luxury, performance, and engaging driving dynamics; want a practical grand tourer; or desire high-performance thrills at used car prices.

Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious about running costs, prioritise conventional styling, or require spacious rear seating.

Competitive Position: The BMW 6 Series (2003-2010) is a tremendous grand tourer offering effortless performance and rewarding driving dynamics at excellent used car value. Whilst the Audi A5 offers more conventional styling and the Mercedes-Benz CLS provides premium refinement, the 6 Series delivers superior entertainment and a broader engine range. The Jaguar XK is equally engaging but typically commands higher prices. The 6 Series strikes an exceptional balance between B-road entertainment and long-distance comfort, making it an outstanding choice for those prioritising driving pleasure and performance over running costs.
