BMW 7 Series (2015-2022) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Sharper to drive than most luxury cars	Doesn't ride with the serenity of a Mercedes S-Class
Slick iDrive infotainment system	Plain looks and an ungainly grille
Huge rear-seat space in long-wheelbase versions	Complex technology could land used 7 Series owners with a big bill

Quick Summary

The BMW 7 Series (2015-2022), known as the G11 model, is a luxury limousine that combines lavish interiors with extensive equipment. Whilst its vast grille dominates the front end, the styling is somewhat plain compared to rivals, sharing design elements with lesser BMWs. The car offers plenty of space to stretch out, with a 515-litre boot and optional long-wheelbase versions providing an extra 14cm between the wheels for enhanced rear legroom. Passengers can enjoy electrically operated glass sunroofs, roller blinds, and optional ventilated reclinable rear seats.

The 7 Series provides a choice of three petrol and two diesel engines, plus a plug-in hybrid option, all paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Most buyers opt for either the 328bhp 3.0-litre petrol turbo in the 740i or the 282bhp 3.0-litre turbodiesel in the 730d, both delivering hushed, effortless progress. Air suspension comes as standard, effectively damping road imperfections, though Mercedes' S-Class suspension performs marginally better. The 7 Series demonstrates impressive composure on twisty roads with substantial grip and minimal body lean. The 730d achieves around 45mpg in everyday driving, whilst petrol versions are considerably thirstier, with the 740i averaging 30mpg and the V12-powered M760Li struggling to exceed 20mpg.

Best for: Buyers seeking a spacious, well-equipped luxury saloon with sharp handling and advanced infotainment, particularly those valuing rear-seat comfort in long-wheelbase versions.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising the serene ride quality of a Mercedes S-Class, preferring distinctive styling, or concerned about complex technology repair costs on used examples.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 7 Series if: You seek a spacious, well-equipped luxury saloon with sharp handling and advanced infotainment, particularly valuing rear-seat comfort in long-wheelbase versions.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the serene ride quality of a Mercedes S-Class, prefer distinctive styling, or are concerned about complex technology repair costs on used examples.

Competitive Position: The BMW 7 Series (2015-2022) is a capable luxury saloon that delivers impressive driving dynamics and a slick infotainment system. However, it falls slightly short of its competitors in overall refinement. Whilst it handles better than most luxury cars in its class, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers superior ride comfort and a higher overall CarGurus rating of 4.6 out of 5. The Audi A8 boasts an exceptional user rating of 5.0 out of 5, whilst the Range Rover provides an alternative with SUV practicality. For buyers prioritising sharp handling and technology over serene comfort, the 7 Series remains an excellent choice, though rivals edge ahead on specific attributes.
