BMW 7 Series (2015-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Sharper to drive than most luxury cars | Doesn't ride with the serenity of a Mercedes S-Class |
| Slick iDrive infotainment system | Plain looks and an ungainly grille |
| Huge rear-seat space in long-wheelbase versions | Complex technology could land used 7 Series owners with a big bill |
Quick Summary
The BMW 7 Series (2015-2022), known as the G11 model, is a luxury saloon that combines lavish interiors with extensive equipment. With 515 litres of boot space and optional long-wheelbase versions offering an extra 14cm between the wheels for enhanced rear legroom, it caters to those seeking premium comfort and space. The range includes three petrol and two diesel engines, plus a plug-in hybrid option, all paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The 730d diesel and 740i petrol are the most popular choices, delivering hushed, effortless progress with air suspension as standard.
The 7 Series excels in composure and grip, refusing to feel as heavy or vast as its dimensions suggest. Its slick iDrive infotainment system and beautiful interior materials create a classy environment, though the dashboard design is somewhat ordinary compared to rivals. Running costs vary by engine choice, with the 730d achieving around 45mpg, whilst petrol variants are considerably thirstier. Available in three core versions—base, Exclusive, and M Sport—it offers something for different preferences, though its plain styling and slightly softer ride compared to the Mercedes S-Class may give some pause.
Best for: Buyers seeking a spacious, well-equipped luxury saloon with sharp handling, those valuing the long-wheelbase option for rear-seat comfort, and those who appreciate BMW's iDrive technology.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising the serene ride quality of a Mercedes S-Class, buyers concerned about complex technology repair costs, or those seeking distinctive, eye-catching styling.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW 7 Series | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 28.6% | 4.2/5 |
| Audi A8 | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 31.5% | 4.3/5 |
| Range Rover | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.4% | 4.4/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz S-Class | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 32.0% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the 7 Series if: You value sharp handling in a luxury saloon, appreciate the long-wheelbase option for rear-seat comfort, or prefer BMW's iDrive infotainment system.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the serene ride quality of a Mercedes S-Class, are concerned about complex technology repair costs, or seek distinctive, eye-catching styling.
Competitive Position: The BMW 7 Series (2015-2022) is a capable luxury saloon that handles better than most rivals, offering spacious interiors and slick technology. However, it falls slightly short of its competitors in overall refinement and presence. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers superior ride quality and user satisfaction, whilst the Audi A8 matches its expert rating with higher user scores. The Range Rover provides alternative appeal with its SUV practicality. For buyers prioritising driving engagement and technology over serene comfort, the 7 Series remains a strong choice, though its plain styling and slightly firmer ride may deter those seeking the ultimate in luxury refinement.

(4 reviews)Really fantastic car so comfortable & great fun to drive
Strong and well economic car. Very reliable with valued second hand price
Amazing car. Even the 2014 being older than I wanted, its still miles ahead of most newer cars. The air suspension is unbelievable.
Top notch car, very hard to find another car with so many toys thats equivalent to 7 series BMW unless you can afford a Bentley.
