BMW 7 Series (2015-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Sharper to drive than most luxury cars | Doesn't ride with the serenity of a Mercedes S-Class |
| Slick iDrive infotainment system | Plain looks and an ungainly grille |
| Huge rear-seat space in long-wheelbase versions | Complex technology could land used 7 Series owners with a big bill |
Quick Summary
The BMW 7 Series (2015-2022), known as the G11 model, is a luxury limousine that combines lavish interiors with extensive equipment. Whilst its vast grille and plain styling may lack the visual drama of rivals, the 7 Series delivers a refined driving experience with a choice of three petrol, two diesel, and a plug-in hybrid engine option, all paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The standard air suspension effectively dampens road imperfections, and the car's composure through corners impresses despite its considerable size. The long-wheelbase L version offers an additional 14cm of rear legroom, plus a glass sunroof and motorised roller blind as standard.
Inside, the 7 Series is a classy environment featuring beautiful materials and BMW's slick iDrive infotainment system, with physical climate control buttons retained. Three core trim levels are available: the base model, the more luxurious Exclusive, and the sporty M Sport. The 730d diesel is the most economical choice, delivering around 45mpg in real-world driving, whilst petrol variants are considerably thirstier, with the 740i achieving approximately 30mpg. Running costs are reasonable for the class, though the complex technology could prove expensive if repairs are needed outside warranty.
Best for: Buyers seeking a spacious, refined luxury saloon with sharp handling, those valuing the long-wheelbase version for rear-seat comfort, and those who appreciate BMW's iDrive system.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising the serene ride quality of a Mercedes S-Class, buyers seeking distinctive styling, or those concerned about potential repair costs for complex technology.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW 7 Series | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.0% | 4.2/5 |
| Audi A8 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 30.6% | 4.2/5 |
| Range Rover | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.1% | 4.4/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz S-Class | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 31.2% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the 7 Series if: You seek a spacious, refined luxury saloon with sharp handling, value the long-wheelbase version for rear-seat comfort, or appreciate BMW's iDrive infotainment system.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the serene ride quality of a Mercedes S-Class, desire distinctive styling, or are concerned about potential repair costs for complex technology.
Competitive Position: The BMW 7 Series (2015-2022) is a capable luxury saloon that delivers sharp handling and a refined driving experience, setting it apart from some competitors. However, it falls slightly short of rivals in terms of overall refinement and visual appeal. Whilst the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Range Rover offer superior ride comfort and presence respectively, the 7 Series remains an excellent choice for those prioritising driving dynamics and technology. Its competitive pricing and strong user ratings make it a sensible alternative to more expensive rivals, particularly for buyers valuing the long-wheelbase variant's exceptional rear-seat space.

Strong and well economic car. Very reliable with valued second hand price
Amazing car. Even the 2014 being older than I wanted, its still miles ahead of most newer cars. The air suspension is unbelievable.
Top notch car, very hard to find another car with so many toys thats equivalent to 7 series BMW unless you can afford a Bentley.
Pfonominal piece of kit for the money! Nothing to compare it with!!
