the car is very highly specified and well finished. Pricewise it holds with other brands in the market. It is not for everyone as it could seem too imposing.

BMW 8 Series (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Quick and handles well | Not as exciting as a Porsche 911 |
| xDrive 4x4 models perform in all weathers | Not as luxurious as a Mercedes S-Class Coupe |
| Choice of convertible, coupe and four-door body styles | Coupe and convertible are cramped in the back |
Quick Summary
The BMW 8 Series (2018-present) is a striking grand tourer that straddles the middle ground between the overtly sporting Porsche 911 and the sumptuous Mercedes S-Class Coupe. Available as a two-door coupe, convertible, or four-door Gran Coupe, it revives a model name first introduced in 1990. The 8 Series is BMW's flagship performance model, with the M8 Competition offering the fastest and most powerful road car BMW has ever produced. The four-door Gran Coupe provides the most practical boot space at 440 litres, whilst the regular coupe offers 420 litres and the convertible 350 litres.
Dynamically, the 8 Series is far too big and heavy to be a true sports car, instead functioning as a refined grand tourer with a sharper edge in M8 variants. It delivers accurate steering, lusty performance across the range, and truly breathtaking acceleration in M8 Competition form. Running costs vary dramatically: the 840d achieves around 40mpg, whilst the M8 Competition manages only 22mpg in mixed driving. All variants incur £475 annual road tax, though more powerful petrol models face a £1,850 first-year rate. Insurance sits in group 44 minimum, with M variants in the highest group. Servicing costs can be spread via BMW's fixed-price plans at £30 monthly for non-M models and £45 for the M8 Competition.
Best for: Buyers seeking a sophisticated grand tourer combining performance with everyday usability, those wanting all-weather capability via xDrive, and those desiring multiple body style options.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising the raw thrills of a Porsche 911, those seeking the ultimate in luxury like the Mercedes S-Class Coupe, or those needing spacious rear seating in coupe and convertible variants.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW 8 Series | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 38.1% | 4.2/5 |
| Porsche 911 | 5/5 | 4.6/5 | 25.5% | 4.3/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 27.7% | 4.4/5 |
| Aston Martin Vantage | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 28.7% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the 8 Series if: You seek a sophisticated grand tourer combining performance with everyday usability, desire all-weather capability via xDrive, or want multiple body style options including a practical four-door variant.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the raw thrills of a Porsche 911, seek the ultimate in luxury like the Mercedes S-Class Coupe, or need spacious rear seating in coupe and convertible variants.
Competitive Position: The BMW 8 Series occupies a compelling middle ground in the premium grand tourer segment. Whilst it may not match the Porsche 911's uncompromising performance or the Mercedes S-Class Coupe's sumptuous refinement, it offers a well-rounded proposition with genuine versatility. The availability of convertible, coupe, and four-door body styles sets it apart from rivals, and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system provides superior all-weather capability. However, the coupe and convertible's cramped rear seating limits practicality for those regularly carrying passengers. The M8 Competition delivers thrilling performance, whilst the diesel 840d offers impressive efficiency. Overall, the 8 Series represents an attractive choice for discerning buyers seeking a sophisticated, capable grand tourer that doesn't compromise on style or performance.
