Replaced a 2013 X3 and this motor is more maneuverable and nippy, but does not have the same presence on the road. We have reduced from two cars and my wife is happy with this too. I think a qualified positive, but we shall see.

BMW X1 (2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Beautifully appointed interior | Ride slightly firmer than some rivals |
| Brilliant on space and practicality | Higher-end models are expensive |
| Pleasant to drive | Too much desirable kit costs extra |
Quick Summary
The BMW X1 is the third-generation entry-level SUV in BMW's lineup, offering a compelling blend of practicality, style and driving enjoyment. At 4.5 metres long, it's larger than ever and provides impressive interior space with a 540-litre boot, rear seats that slide and recline, and a beautifully appointed cabin with the latest infotainment technology. The range includes mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines, plug-in hybrids with up to 56 miles of electric range, and the sporty M35i variant, ensuring there's an option for every lifestyle and budget.
The X1 excels in practicality with two sets of Isofix attachments, comfortable rear accommodation for two adults or three children, and excellent build quality throughout. Whilst the ride can be slightly firmer than some rivals like the Volvo XC40, the handling is planted and confident with a sporty edge. Running costs are competitive, with plug-in hybrids achieving impressive official figures if regularly charged. However, many desirable features such as heated seats, keyless entry and adaptive headlights come as costly optional extras, and higher-spec models can easily exceed £50,000.
Best for: Families seeking a premium compact SUV with excellent practicality, those wanting a plug-in hybrid with genuine electric range, and drivers who value a well-appointed interior and confident handling.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising the softest ride quality, or those unwilling to pay extra for key comfort and convenience features.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW X1 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 39.5% | 4.5/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz GLA | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 39.7% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi Q3 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 38.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Volvo XC40 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 38.1% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the X1 if: You're seeking a premium compact SUV with excellent practicality, want a plug-in hybrid with genuine electric range, or value a well-appointed interior and confident handling.
Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, prioritise the softest ride quality, or are unwilling to pay extra for key comfort and convenience features.
Competitive Position: The BMW X1 is one of the strongest all-rounders in the competitive compact SUV class. It matches the Volvo XC40 for overall CarGurus rating and user satisfaction, whilst offering a more premium interior and better practicality than the Audi Q3. The Mercedes GLA is similarly priced but the X1 provides superior space and a more engaging driving experience. Its generous plug-in hybrid electric range and diverse engine options make it particularly appealing for families seeking versatility and sophistication. However, the abundance of costly optional extras and slightly firmer ride may deter some buyers who prefer softer-riding alternatives.
