BMW X2 (2017-2023) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent iDrive infotainment system | Brittle and uncompromising ride |
| Low benefit-in-kind tax if you run the plug-in hybrid as a company car | The X1 is roomier and more practical |
| Sensible running costs | Odd looks |
Quick Summary
The BMW X2 (2017-2023) is a distinctive crossover that prioritises style over traditional SUV traits, offering a driving position that feels more like a hatchback. While based on the practical X1, the X2 is less spacious; its 470-litre boot is respectable, but tight rear door openings make it less family-friendly. The car’s biggest compromise is its ride quality, which is firm and often jarring, particularly on models with larger wheels or M Sport suspension, detracting from its appeal as a comfortable daily driver.
Inside, the X2 shines with its class-leading iDrive infotainment system, which is intuitive and features Apple CarPlay, with Android Auto available on later models. Running costs are a strong point for a premium brand, thanks to strong residual values and efficient engines, especially the diesels which can return over 40mpg. The plug-in hybrid model also offers tax advantages for company car users. The X2 is a niche vehicle, blending premium tech with a firm, car-like feel in a crossover package.
Best for: Style-conscious drivers who value a premium badge, excellent in-car technology, and sensible running costs in a crossover that drives like a hatchback.
Not ideal for: Families who need easy rear-seat access and maximum practicality, or buyers who prioritise a comfortable and forgiving ride.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW X2 | 3/5 | 5/5 | 35.5% | 4.2/5 |
| Audi Q3 | 4/5 | 4.1/5 | 32.9% | 4.3/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz GLA | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.6% | 4.4/5 |
| Volvo XC40 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.9% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the X2 if: You want a premium crossover that prioritises style, technology, and car-like handling over outright space and comfort.
Consider alternatives if: You require more family-friendly practicality and space, or if a comfortable, compliant ride is a top priority.
Competitive Position: The BMW X2 carves a niche in the premium compact SUV segment by offering a sporty, low-slung design that sacrifices some practicality and comfort. While its infotainment and running costs are competitive, its firm ride and compromised space mean that more conventional rivals like the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Volvo XC40 are often more well-rounded alternatives for a broader range of buyers.

5 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Excellent - Sporty crossover - Very good on fuel and the auto gearbox a job. Well equipped and bags of room.
Very pleased with the car, having a 4 series I was skeptical about going for a smaller SUV type vehicle, but a very pleasant surprise, car feels and drives impeccably, you feel secure within as very well built and sturdy. Engine is equally as good as the last 4 series I just sold, went for Petrol this time, not had one of them for many years, it drives like a dream, quiet and very responsive, inside for a smaller SUV it is still spacious, and a good hatch / boot area.
See my earlier comments. X2 has lots of brilliant features in the high spec.versions, very well built from quality materials, excellent panel gaps.......made to last!! Unfortunately, the high spec. versions are TOO EXPENSIVE..There are other brands that will give you very high spec. for a lot less money, but they dont have the same cachet as BMs.
Low mileage, good price how ever colour is not my favourite
It is a gorgeous looking car. Hi spec interior, powerful engine, very well balanced ride. I want one!!
