BMW X2 (2017-2023) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Excellent iDrive infotainment system	Brittle and uncompromising ride
Low benefit-in-kind tax if you run the plug-in hybrid as a company car	The X1 is roomier and more practical
Sensible running costs	Odd looks

Quick Summary

The BMW X2 (2017-2023) is an unconventional compact SUV that blurs the line between hatchback and crossover. Rather than offering the commanding driving position typical of SUVs, the X2 maintains a low seating position similar to a conventional hatchback, which may disappoint buyers seeking the traditional SUV experience. It provides a 470-litre boot and comes equipped with BMW's acclaimed iDrive infotainment system, featuring a responsive touchscreen and rotary controller. The X2 offers a range of efficient engines, including diesel options delivering 40-45mpg in real-world driving, alongside petrol and plug-in hybrid variants.

However, the X2's ride quality is notably firm and uncompromising, particularly with larger wheels or M Sport suspension, which can compromise comfort. Rear passenger space is limited, with a low seating position and high window line that may feel claustrophobic for children. Access to rear seats is restricted, making installation of child seats challenging. Despite these drawbacks, the X2 benefits from strong BMW residual values, sensible running costs, and excellent insurance groups. It represents an unusual positioning in the market, offering premium technology and efficiency without the practicality or commanding presence of traditional SUVs.

Best for: Premium brand enthusiasts, company car drivers (particularly plug-in hybrid users), and those prioritising advanced infotainment and running costs over traditional SUV practicality.

Not ideal for: Families with young children, buyers seeking a comfortable ride, those wanting traditional SUV space and driving position, or those prioritising rear passenger comfort.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the X2 if: You're a premium brand enthusiast, a company car driver (particularly with the plug-in hybrid), or you prioritise advanced infotainment and sensible running costs over traditional SUV practicality.

Consider alternatives if: You have young children, seek a comfortable ride, want traditional SUV space and driving position, or require excellent rear passenger comfort.

Competitive Position: The BMW X2 occupies an unusual niche in the compact SUV market, offering premium technology and efficiency but lacking the practicality and commanding presence of traditional rivals. Whilst its iDrive infotainment system and running costs are excellent, the firm ride and limited rear space are significant drawbacks. Competitors like the Volvo XC40 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class offer more conventional SUV experiences with better rear accommodation. The Audi Q3 provides superior value for money. The X2 is best suited to those prioritising premium brand appeal and technology over practical family transport, making it a niche choice rather than a mainstream recommendation.
