BMW X2 (2017-2023) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent iDrive infotainment system | Brittle and uncompromising ride |
| Low benefit-in-kind tax if you run the plug-in hybrid as a company car | The X1 is roomier and more practical |
| Sensible running costs | Odd looks |
Quick Summary
The BMW X2 (2017-2023) is an unconventional compact SUV that blurs the line between hatchback and crossover. Rather than offering the commanding driving position typical of SUVs, the X2 sits low with a seating position barely different from a standard hatchback. It provides a 470-litre boot and comes equipped with BMW's polished iDrive infotainment system, featuring touchscreen and rotary controller operation, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The range includes petrol and diesel engines, with the latter delivering real-world economy of 40-45mpg, whilst petrol variants achieve slightly lower figures.
The X2's ride quality is notably firm and uncompromising across all variants, particularly with larger wheels or M Sport suspension. Access to rear seats is limited due to small door openings, making it less suitable for families with young children; the X1 or BMW 2 Series Active Tourer would be better alternatives. Running costs are sensible thanks to strong residual values typical of BMW products, and insurance groups are competitive. However, the vehicle's odd positioning—lacking the height of traditional SUVs whilst offering less practicality than the X1—makes it a niche proposition with unclear purpose.
Best for: Buyers seeking premium infotainment and technology, company car users interested in the plug-in hybrid variant, and those prioritising sensible running costs over traditional SUV practicality.
Not ideal for: Families with young children requiring spacious rear seats and easy access, buyers seeking a comfortable ride on larger wheels, or those wanting a conventional SUV with commanding driving position and maximum boot space.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW X2 | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 33.4% | 4.2/5 |
| Audi Q3 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 33.7% | 4.3/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.1% | 4.4/5 |
| Volvo XC40 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.7% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the X2 if: You prioritise premium infotainment and technology, are a company car user interested in the plug-in hybrid variant, or seek sensible running costs over traditional SUV practicality.
Consider alternatives if: You have young children requiring spacious rear seats and easy access, seek a comfortable ride on larger wheels, or want a conventional SUV with commanding driving position and maximum boot space.
Competitive Position: The BMW X2 occupies an unusual niche in the compact SUV market, offering excellent infotainment and sensible running costs but compromised by a firm ride and limited practicality. Whilst it achieves strong user ratings, its expert rating of 3 out of 5 reflects its unclear positioning. Rivals like the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, and Volvo XC40 all score higher with experts and offer more conventional SUV attributes. The X2's appeal lies primarily in its technology and premium brand appeal rather than practicality or driving comfort, making it a choice for those valuing style and infotainment over substance.

5 Overall rating
(3 reviews)Excellent - Sporty crossover - Very good on fuel and the auto gearbox a job. Well equipped and bags of room.
Very pleased with the car, having a 4 series I was skeptical about going for a smaller SUV type vehicle, but a very pleasant surprise, car feels and drives impeccably, you feel secure within as very well built and sturdy. Engine is equally as good as the last 4 series I just sold, went for Petrol this time, not had one of them for many years, it drives like a dream, quiet and very responsive, inside for a smaller SUV it is still spacious, and a good hatch / boot area.
See my earlier comments. X2 has lots of brilliant features in the high spec.versions, very well built from quality materials, excellent panel gaps.......made to last!! Unfortunately, the high spec. versions are TOO EXPENSIVE..There are other brands that will give you very high spec. for a lot less money, but they dont have the same cachet as BMs.
