The X2 has all the features I want. It has a quality finish and a sporty look compared to the X1 and X3.

Very pleased with the car, having a 4 series I was skeptical about going for a smaller SUV type vehicle, but a very pleasant surprise, car feels and drives impeccably, you feel secure within as very well built and sturdy. Engine is equally as good as the last 4 series I just sold, went for Petrol this time, not had one of them for many years, it drives like a dream, quiet and very responsive, inside for a smaller SUV it is still spacious, and a good hatch / boot area.

See my earlier comments. X2 has lots of brilliant features in the high spec.versions, very well built from quality materials, excellent panel gaps.......made to last!! Unfortunately, the high spec. versions are TOO EXPENSIVE..There are other brands that will give you very high spec. for a lot less money, but they dont have the same cachet as BMs.

BMW X2 (2017-2023) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent iDrive infotainment system | Brittle and uncompromising ride |
| Low benefit-in-kind tax if you run the plug-in hybrid as a company car | The X1 is roomier and more practical |
| Sensible running costs | Odd looks |
Quick Summary
The BMW X2 (2017-2023) is a compact crossover that occupies an unusual position in the SUV market. Rather than offering the commanding driving position typical of SUVs, it sits low like a conventional hatchback, blending SUV styling with car-like handling. The X2 provides a 470-litre boot and comes equipped with BMW's acclaimed iDrive infotainment system, featuring touchscreen and rotary controller operation with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. However, the ride is notably firm and uncompromising, particularly with larger wheels or M Sport suspension, and rear passenger space is limited with a high window line that may feel claustrophobic for children.
Running costs are sensible for a premium brand, with diesel variants achieving 40-45mpg in real-world driving and petrol models performing reasonably well. BMW's strong residual values and fixed-price servicing options help keep ownership costs competitive. The plug-in hybrid variant offers attractive benefit-in-kind tax advantages for company car users. However, the X2's odd positioning—lacking the height of traditional SUVs whilst offering less practicality than the related X1—makes it a niche proposition. It's best suited to childless buyers prioritising premium infotainment and running costs over traditional SUV practicality.
Best for: Buyers seeking premium infotainment and technology, company car users interested in the plug-in hybrid variant, and those prioritising sensible running costs over maximum practicality.
Not ideal for: Families with young children requiring spacious rear seats and easy access, buyers seeking a comfortable ride on larger wheels, or those wanting traditional SUV practicality and commanding driving position.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW X2 | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 35.2% | 4.2/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz GLA | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 39.7% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi Q3 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 38.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Volvo XC40 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 38.1% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the X2 if: You prioritise premium infotainment and technology, are a company car user interested in the plug-in hybrid variant, or seek sensible running costs over maximum practicality.
Consider alternatives if: You have young children requiring spacious rear seats, need a comfortable ride on larger wheels, or want traditional SUV practicality and a commanding driving position.
Competitive Position: The BMW X2 (2017-2023) occupies a niche position in the compact crossover market with its distinctive low-slung stance and premium iDrive infotainment. Whilst it delivers sensible running costs and excellent technology, its firm ride and limited rear practicality place it behind rivals like the Volvo XC40 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, which offer superior comfort and space. The X2 appeals primarily to technology-focused buyers and company car users seeking the plug-in hybrid's tax advantages, rather than those prioritising traditional SUV practicality or driving comfort.
