BMW X5 (2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Far more enjoyable to drive than most large SUVs | Not as capable off road as a Land Rover Discovery |
| Brilliant plug-in hybrid version | Petrols in particular are expensive to run |
| Staggering performance of X5 M | Not everyone will take to the styling |
Quick Summary
The BMW X5 is the fourth-generation luxury SUV, introduced in 2018 and facelifted in 2023. It offers an impressive blend of performance, style, space and practicality, with a wide choice of engines including an efficient plug-in hybrid xDrive50e, two diesel options, and high-performance V8-powered M models. The X5 feels impressively car-like to drive, with tidy body control and the reassurance of standard four-wheel drive. It provides excellent passenger space with ample room for five adults, and an optional third row of seats is available on non-hybrid versions. Boot capacity is strong at 650 litres in five-seat models, expanding to 1,870 litres with rear seats folded flat.
The xDrive50e plug-in hybrid is the most efficient option, emitting as little as 19g/km of CO2 and achieving a claimed 353mpg, making it ideal for company car drivers. Diesel versions deliver respectable efficiency, whilst the V8-powered M models offer supercar-baiting pace at the expense of fuel economy. The X5 majors on long-distance ability, with standard air suspension soaking up poor road surfaces and keeping wind and road noise to a minimum. All versions feature a curved digital dashboard with a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and comprehensive standard equipment including heated front seats, automatic climate control, and adaptive LED headlights.
Best for: Drivers seeking a spacious, luxurious SUV that genuinely enjoys being driven, company car users (especially with the plug-in hybrid), and those prioritising long-distance comfort and refinement.
Not ideal for: Buyers requiring serious off-road capability, those with tight budgets, or those seeking low running costs with petrol or V8 engines.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW X5 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 37.7% | 4.6/5 |
| Porsche Cayenne | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 36.8% | 4.4/5 |
| Volvo XC90 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 36.6% | 4.4/5 |
| Range Rover Sport | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 42.2% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the X5 if: You seek a spacious, luxurious SUV that genuinely enjoys being driven, you're a company car user (especially with the plug-in hybrid), or you prioritise long-distance comfort and refinement.
Consider alternatives if: You require serious off-road capability, have a tight budget, or seek low running costs with petrol or V8 engines.
Competitive Position: The BMW X5 stands out as one of the most well-rounded large premium SUVs available. It gets the big stuff right: spacious, properly luxurious, and genuinely enjoyable to drive, feeling better behind the wheel than rivals such as the Volvo XC90 whilst remaining easy and refined in everyday use. Whilst the Porsche Cayenne is more fun to drive and the Land Rover Discovery is better for off-road driving, the X5 excels on the road. If you spend most of your time on tarmac, the X5 is one of the most accomplished SUVs in its class, offering superior driving dynamics and refinement compared to its competitors.
