BMW X5 (2014-2018) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Drives well on tarmac for such a big and heavy car	Costly to run, especially if you choose a petrol
The Professional Adaptive Suspension package improves the ride and handling even further	Not as able off road as a Land Rover Discovery
High-quality, roomy cabin	The aggressive styling is too brutish for some tastes

Quick Summary

The BMW X5 (2014-2018), the third-generation model, demonstrates that large SUVs can deliver an engaging driving experience. Introduced in 2013, this generation built upon its predecessor with new technologies, efficient powertrains, and sharper styling. It marked the debut of sDrive rear-wheel-drive models, offering lower costs and improved efficiency compared to heavier xDrive all-wheel-drive variants. The X5 boasts a vast 650-litre boot, five spacious seats, and optional third-row seating for seven occupants. Despite its mass, the X5 provides a more enjoyable and capable driving experience than rival offerings, with even the entry-level sDrive25d diesel accelerating from 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds.

The engine line-up ranges from a four-cylinder diesel sDrive25d to a V8 petrol xDrive50i, with outputs spanning 215bhp to 442bhp, all paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A high-performance X5 M variant arrived in late 2014, whilst a plug-in hybrid X5 xDrive40e launched in early 2015. The cabin is high-quality and well-equipped, with the SE trim including cruise control, leather, parking sensors, xenon lights, and BMW Professional Multimedia with satnav. However, running costs are substantial, particularly for petrol versions, with real-world economy typically under 30mpg for diesels and under 20mpg for petrols. BMW offers fixed-price service plans to help manage expenditure.

Best for: Buyers seeking a refined, spacious premium SUV with impressive on-road performance, those wanting optional seven-seat capability, and drivers prioritising comfort and technology over off-road ability.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers concerned about high running costs, those seeking superior off-road capability, or buyers preferring sleeker, less aggressive styling.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the X5 if: You're seeking a refined, spacious premium SUV with impressive on-road performance, want optional seven-seat capability, or prioritise comfort and technology over off-road ability.

Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious about high running costs, need superior off-road capability, or prefer sleeker, less aggressive styling.

Competitive Position: The BMW X5 (2014-2018) is a compelling choice in the premium large SUV segment, delivering excellent equipment, strong engines, and impressive on-road performance. Whilst rivals like the Audi Q7 offer better value and the Range Rover Velar provides a more luxurious, upmarket experience with sleeker styling, the X5 remains a refined and capable option. The Volvo XC90 and Jaguar F-Pace also present worthy alternatives. However, if you prioritise badge appeal and appearance, those competitors may prove preferable. Otherwise, the BMW X5 delivers a suitably refined and impressive experience that won't leave you wanting.
