BYD Dolphin (2024-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very well equipped	An MG4 is better rounded
Great value for money	Infotainment has its irritations
Very decent real-world range	Some cheap-feeling plastics tucked away

Quick Summary

The BYD Dolphin is a small electric hatchback that offers excellent value and generous equipment. With a 60kWh battery delivering 265 miles of WLTP range, it competes well with rivals like the Peugeot e-208, Vauxhall Corsa Electric, and Nissan Leaf. The 201bhp motor provides spirited performance with a 0-62mph time of 7.0 seconds, whilst rapid charging at up to 88kW enables a 10-80% charge in 40 minutes. A smaller 45kWh battery with 211 miles of range is forthcoming at around £26,000, making it one of the few genuinely affordable electric cars available.

Practicality is solid with 345 litres of boot space, good rear legroom, and a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Even the entry-level Comfort trim includes LED headlights, heated mirrors, 360-degree parking camera, adaptive cruise control, and a heat pump. Running costs are impressively low at around 3p per mile with off-peak home charging. Whilst the styling is somewhat bland compared to the sharper MG4 and Peugeot e-208, and the active safety systems need refinement, the Dolphin represents a tempting prospect for budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, well-equipped electric family car.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable electric car, families wanting practical space and generous equipment, and those prioritising low running costs and finance deals.

Not ideal for: Buyers seeking premium styling, engaging driving dynamics, or those wanting the most refined active safety systems.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Dolphin if: You're seeking an affordable electric car with generous equipment, practical space for families, and low running costs, or you're attracted by competitive finance deals.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium styling, engaging driving dynamics, or the most refined active safety systems and infotainment operation.

Competitive Position: The BYD Dolphin is a compelling proposition in the affordable electric car market, offering exceptional value and generous standard equipment. Whilst the MG4 edges ahead with superior styling and driving dynamics, and the Peugeot e-208 offers sharper design, the Dolphin's combination of practicality, equipment levels, and attractive finance options make it a tempting choice for budget-conscious buyers. With a decent real-world range and low running costs, it represents a sensible entry point into electric motoring, particularly for families prioritising value over premium appeal.
