BYD Dolphin (2024-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very well equipped	An MG4 is better rounded
Great value for money	Infotainment has its irritations
Very decent real-world range	Some cheap-feeling plastics tucked away

Quick Summary

The BYD Dolphin is a small electric hatchback that represents excellent value for money in the affordable EV market. Offered with a 60kWh battery delivering 265 miles of WLTP range, it competes favourably with rivals like the Peugeot e-208, Vauxhall Corsa Electric, and Nissan Leaf. The 201bhp motor provides brisk acceleration with a 0-62mph time of 7.0 seconds, whilst rapid charging at up to 88kW enables a 10-80% charge in 40 minutes. A smaller 45kWh battery with 211 miles of range is also planned, potentially priced around £26,000. The 4.3-metre hatchback offers practical interior space with 345 litres of boot capacity, a 60/40 split rear seat, and useful underfloor storage for charging cables.

Generously equipped across both Comfort and Design trim levels, the Dolphin includes LED headlights, 360-degree parking camera, adaptive cruise control, and a heat pump as standard. The standout 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen dominates the dashboard with good graphics and responsiveness, though some functions require navigating multiple menus. Running costs are impressively low at around 3p per mile when charging at home on standard tariffs, or 8p without off-peak rates. Affordable PCP finance deals starting from £269 per month make this an attractive proposition for budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, well-equipped electric family car.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking affordable electric motoring, families needing practical interior space, and those prioritising generous equipment levels and low running costs.

Not ideal for: Drivers wanting a more engaging driving experience, those seeking premium styling, or buyers requiring flawless active safety systems and intuitive infotainment operation.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Dolphin if: You're seeking affordable electric motoring with generous equipment, practical interior space, and low running costs, or prioritising value for money over driving dynamics.

Consider alternatives if: You want a more engaging driving experience, premium styling, or require flawless active safety systems and intuitive infotainment operation.

Competitive Position: The BYD Dolphin is a temptingly affordable electric hatchback that delivers excellent value and generous equipment levels. Whilst the MG4 offers a more rounded package with better styling and more engaging handling, and the Peugeot 208 provides superior design appeal, the Dolphin's combination of affordability, practicality, and low running costs makes it an attractive proposition for budget-conscious buyers. Its competitive pricing and attractive finance deals position it well against rivals, though potential buyers should be aware that some active safety systems require refinement and the driving experience is more functional than thrilling.
