Citroen Berlingo (2018-Present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Enormous boot and flexible seating | Some rivals have longer new-car warranties |
| Affordable to buy and run | Seven-seat XL models are expensive |
| Sliding rear doors | Leans a lot when cornering |
Quick Summary
The Citroen Berlingo (2018-present) is one of the most practical passenger cars available, offering van-based practicality wrapped in quirky, family-friendly styling. This third-generation model, refreshed in 2023, is available as a five-seater or seven-seater XL, with sliding rear doors and an awning-sized tailgate. The regular Berlingo provides 775 litres of boot space, expanding to 3,000 litres with seats folded flat, whilst the XL offers a colossal 1,050 litres behind the middle row and 3,500 litres with both rows folded. Packed with clever storage solutions, the Berlingo prioritises practicality over style, making it ideal for families juggling multiple needs.
Engine options include a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol with 111bhp and a 1.4-litre turbodiesel with 101bhp or 129bhp variants. Petrol versions achieve around 45.8mpg, whilst diesel engines deliver over 50mpg on combined cycles. The soft suspension soaks up bumps effectively, though body lean is pronounced when cornering—a trade-off for comfort and practicality. Running costs are low, with insurance groups starting from 10, and used examples are readily available. The Berlingo does an impressive job of disguising its humble commercial origins whilst remaining honest and unpretentious about its purpose.
Best for: Families needing maximum practicality, self-employed workers juggling business and personal requirements, and budget-conscious buyers seeking affordable, versatile transport.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising sporty handling, those seeking premium new-car warranties, or buyers wanting a compact five-seater at seven-seater prices.

The Verdict
You should buy the Berlingo if: You need maximum practicality, juggle family and work requirements, or seek affordable, versatile transport with clever storage solutions.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sporty handling, require premium new-car warranties, or want a compact five-seater without paying seven-seater prices.
Competitive Position: The Citroen Berlingo (2018-present) is a strong contender in the practical family vehicle market, offering exceptional value and versatility. Whilst the Skoda Karoq scores higher for expert rating and overall appeal, the Berlingo matches it for user satisfaction and practicality. The Peugeot Rifter shares the same platform but offers fewer deals, whilst the Vauxhall Combo Life achieves perfect user ratings. The Berlingo's strength lies in its honest, unpretentious approach to family motoring, combining affordability, low running costs, and ingenious storage with genuine practicality that few rivals can match.

4.5 Overall rating
(18 reviews)The drivers seat could do with an armrest. The DAB stereo switches off for no reason intermediately. It is a very good van and great value for money.
Perfect for what I need it for, three seats handy for the school run
Great to drive, lots of space for tools. Overall a terrific van. I’ve had lots of vans but this is one of the best. Would definitely recommend this van for tradesmen. I wouldn’t recommend the seat covers as poor fit.
This car is very nice indeed, but it would be better if the back seats could be removed completely. My previous Berlingo, the back seats could be taken out, completely and easily, so it could be used as a van.
Great car. Economical. Carries full spare wheel. Easy to navigate menu
