Citroën Berlingo Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Enormous boot and flexible seating	Some rivals have longer new-car warranties
Affordable to buy and run	Seven-seat XL models are expensive
Sliding rear doors	Leans a lot when cornering

Quick Summary

The Citroën Berlingo is one of the most practical passenger cars available, offering exceptional versatility without sacrificing style or comfort. Available as a five-seater or seven-seater XL, it features sliding rear doors, an enormous tailgate, and ingenious storage solutions throughout. With 775 litres of boot space in standard form or a colossal 3,500 litres with seats folded flat, the Berlingo excels at juggling family needs and practical requirements. The third-generation model, refreshed in 2023, combines quirky Citroën styling with commercial-vehicle practicality, making it an honest and unpretentious choice for those prioritising function over form.

The Berlingo offers a choice of petrol and diesel engines, with the smooth and economical 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel delivering over 50mpg and punchy performance. Petrol versions achieve around 45mpg, whilst both powertrains provide comfortable, quiet driving with well-suppressed road noise. The soft suspension soaks up bumps effectively, though considerable body lean occurs when cornering. Insurance groups start from 11 for entry-level models, and running costs are impressively low. As a used buy, the Berlingo represents excellent value, with diesel versions particularly abundant on the market.

Best for: Families needing maximum practicality, self-employed workers juggling multiple requirements, and buyers seeking affordable, honest motoring without compromise on space.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising sporty handling, drivers seeking the longest new-car warranties, or buyers wanting a premium badge on their vehicle.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Berlingo if: You need maximum practicality and flexible seating, juggle family and work requirements, or seek affordable, honest motoring without compromise on space.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sporty handling, require the longest new-car warranties, or prefer a premium badge on your vehicle.

Competitive Position: The Citroën Berlingo is a standout choice in the practical people carrier segment, offering unmatched versatility and storage solutions at an affordable price. Whilst the Skoda Karoq edges ahead on expert rating and overall score, the Berlingo's superior practicality, sliding doors, and lower running costs make it the smarter choice for families and self-employed buyers. The Peugeot e-Rifter offers electric practicality, but the Berlingo's petrol and diesel options provide greater flexibility and lower costs. For those prioritising space and value over premium appeal, the Berlingo remains an exceptionally honest and capable choice.
