Citroën Berlingo Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Enormous boot and flexible seating | Some rivals have longer new-car warranties |
| Affordable to buy and run | Seven-seat XL models are expensive |
| Sliding rear doors | Leans a lot when cornering |
Quick Summary
The Citroën Berlingo is one of the most practical passenger cars available, offering exceptional versatility without sacrificing comfort or driving refinement. Available as a five-seater or seven-seater XL, it provides up to 3,500 litres of boot space with seats folded, complemented by ingenious storage solutions throughout. The third-generation model, refreshed in 2023, combines quirky styling with genuine functionality, featuring sliding rear doors, a massive tailgate, and flexible seating arrangements that make it ideal for families juggling multiple needs.
The Berlingo offers a choice of petrol and diesel engines, with the 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel delivering smooth, quiet performance and excellent fuel economy beyond 50mpg. Petrol versions achieve around 45mpg with a considered driving style. Whilst the soft suspension and body lean mean it's not built for spirited driving, it's surprisingly quiet and comfortable at motorway speeds. Insurance groups start from 11, and running costs are impressively low, making it an affordable choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking maximum practicality.
Best for: Families needing maximum space and flexibility, self-employed workers requiring dual-purpose vehicles, and buyers prioritising practicality and affordability over driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Those seeking premium badge appeal, drivers wanting sharp handling, or buyers requiring extended new-car warranties as standard.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citroën Berlingo | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 31.7% | 4.4/5 |

| Peugeot e-Rifter | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 29.3% | 4.3/5 |
| Skoda Karoq | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 35.1% | 4.6/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Berlingo if: You need maximum practicality and flexible seating, are juggling family and work requirements, or prioritise affordability and low running costs over driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You seek premium badge appeal, sharp handling characteristics, or extended new-car warranties as standard on all trims.
Competitive Position: The Citroën Berlingo is a standout choice in the practical people-carrier segment, offering exceptional value and versatility. Whilst the Skoda Karoq scores higher for expert rating and overall appeal, the Berlingo surpasses it in sheer practicality and affordability. The Peugeot Rifter, its close cousin, offers similar practicality but the Berlingo provides better value. For budget-conscious families and self-employed workers seeking honest, unpretentious design married to genuine functionality, the Berlingo remains an excellent choice that doesn't compromise on comfort or refinement.

4.6 Overall rating
(9 reviews)Citreon bilingo is a very good car. I really enjoyed driving it. It never fails you.
a very nicely presented car with a low mileage. My problem was it has three seats and I wanted four.
The drivers seat could do with an armrest. The DAB stereo switches off for no reason intermediately. It is a very good van and great value for money.
Perfect for what I need it for, three seats handy for the school run
Great to drive, lots of space for tools. Overall a terrific van. I’ve had lots of vans but this is one of the best. Would definitely recommend this van for tradesmen. I wouldn’t recommend the seat covers as poor fit.
