Citroën C1 (2014-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Cute and quirky looks Very small boot, even for a city car
Easy to drive and small enough to make parking a doddle A VW Up is better to drive
Funky roll-top version The Citroën's new car warranty is short compared with those offered by Hyundai and Kia

Quick Summary

The Citroën C1 (2014-2020) is a relatively basic small city car, ideal for urban runabout duties and well suited to younger drivers embarking on car ownership for the first time. Its cute and quirky design appeals to urban car owners, with a quasi-convertible Airspace version featuring a cloth roof that rolls back to create an open-top car. The interior is basic with hard plastics and cloth seats, but all models except the entry-level Touch trim feature a seven-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The C1 is agile and easy to park with light steering and a small turning circle, though it lacks refinement on faster roads and can feel unsettled over bumps.

Running costs are very manageable, with efficient three-cylinder petrol engines achieving over 65mpg officially and around 55mpg in real-world use. CO2 emissions are below 100g/km, meaning cars registered before 31 March 2017 are exempt from road tax, whilst later models pay just £150 annually. Insurance groups range from 7 to 11, making it ideal for younger drivers, and servicing costs start from around £120. However, the C1 doesn't offer a compelling proposition in any one area when compared to its rivals, with the VW Up offering better driving dynamics and the Hyundai i10 and Kia Picanto providing superior practicality and warranties.

Best for: Younger drivers embarking on car ownership, urban commuters seeking an affordable and easy-to-park city car, and those attracted to its distinctive design and funky Airspace variant.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising boot space, those wanting the finest handling, or buyers seeking comprehensive warranty coverage comparable to Hyundai and Kia offerings.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the C1 if: You're a younger driver seeking an affordable city car, want distinctive and quirky styling, or are attracted to the funky Airspace roll-top variant.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise boot space, require the finest handling, or need comprehensive warranty coverage comparable to Hyundai and Kia offerings.

Competitive Position: The Citroën C1 (2014-2020) is a charming city car with distinctive design appeal and low running costs, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious urban drivers. However, it faces stiff competition in this segment. The Hyundai i10 is a superior all-rounder with better driving dynamics and a higher overall rating, whilst the Kia Picanto and Volkswagen Up offer greater practicality and driving refinement respectively. The C1's problem is that it doesn't offer a compelling proposition in any one area when compared to its rivals, and in some cases those rivals offer distinct advantages. It should be on your shortlist, but don't be surprised if you prefer one of its rivals.

We didn't even bother going to see it. After seeing his google comments score of 1.9 and reading the reviews, we thought it safer to go elsewhere. If you are considering buying a vehicle from here do some research first. I'm so glad i did.

Just love this car, cannot fault it. Cheap road tax and insurance, very good on fuel.

Didnt think Id be able to afford a Citroen C1 Flair so was really pleased when I found this car in my price bracket. Its a smart looking car inside and out. Having never driven anything less than a 1.4 engine I was apprehensive about dropping to a 999cc. I no longer need to do regular long distance motorway driving but this little car doesnt struggle when accelerating upto 70 miles per hour ( foot not hard to floor and felt it could easily gone past 70 without any effort). Its a more comfortable ride than I expected for a small car and its nippy. Yes it does have a bit of a roar when pulling away in 1st . Its Toyota engine has 3 cylinders so perhaps that accounts for the roar . Pulls away better in 2nd. Like the fact its a chain as against cambelt - no expensive repairs. The front seats are roomy whilst the back a little neat but enough for my needs and to fit 2 grandchildren in. Whilst the boot is small and compact . Generally , I wont be transporting rear passengers often ( apart from the dog ) so big enough for my needs. The rear seats split and fold flat when need extra space. Excellent features in the Flair and park assist is useful. Very good qualityAudio system and display screen. Good connection for telephone calls( only gripe is cant seem to transfer my phone contacts??? ). As I havent owned it for long Ive given it 4 stars as unable to comment on economics of running the car but if the specs prove to be true etc... may well rate 5 in future.

The C1 us a very good vehicle excellent value for money and very economical from fuel to insurance and maintenance, although some models are basic but this shouldnt detract from its good points.
