Citroën C4 Cactus (2014-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Quirky design makes rivals seem boring | Not as roomy as a Skoda Octavia |
| Very affordable running costs | A Ford Focus is more fun to drive |
| Poor resale values make it a bargain-priced used car | Unrefined engines and vague controls |
Quick Summary
The Citroën C4 Cactus (2014-2020) is a brilliantly unconventional family hatchback that breaks the mould with its distinctive design and imaginative interior. Initially positioned as a small SUV, it evolved into a quirky alternative to mainstream rivals like the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. Early models feature eye-catching Airbump door protectors, chunky bumpers, and jagged roof rails, whilst the 2018 facelift toned down the styling. The interior is equally wacky, with a protruding dashboard screen, top-loading glove box, and fabric door straps. The car prioritises comfort and practicality, offering generous front-seat space and a squishy, comfortable ride on straight roads.
The engine range includes 81bhp, 109bhp, and 128bhp turbocharged petrol options, plus 99bhp and 1.5-litre diesel variants. Facelifted models feature stop-start technology, with the popular 1.2-litre Puretech 110 achieving around 40mpg in real-world driving. Insurance groups range from 14 to 20, and servicing costs are generally affordable. Whilst the C4 Cactus rolls noticeably in corners and features vague controls, its soft suspension provides exceptional comfort on motorways. Weak residual values make it an excellent bargain for used buyers seeking an affordable, characterful family car with low running costs.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a characterful, affordable family hatchback with low running costs, and those who value quirky design and comfort over driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising spaciousness (like a Skoda Octavia), engaging handling (like a Ford Focus), or conventional styling and controls.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citroën C4 Cactus | 3/5 | 3.7/5 | 43.7% | 4.0/5 |

| Ford Focus Mk3 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 31.9% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the C4 Cactus if: You're seeking a characterful, affordable family hatchback with low running costs, value quirky design and comfort, or want exceptional value from weak residual values.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise spaciousness, engaging handling, conventional styling, or premium build quality and controls.
Competitive Position: The Citroën C4 Cactus (2014-2020) is a distinctive contender in the family hatchback market, offering exceptional value and character at a bargain price. Whilst it trails rivals like the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus for expert ratings and driving dynamics, its weak residual values make it an outstanding used buy for budget-conscious drivers. The Vauxhall Astra sits closer in positioning, though the C4 Cactus' quirky design and lower purchase prices give it a unique appeal. For those prioritising affordability, comfort, and individuality over conventional handling, the C4 Cactus represents remarkable value.

3.7 Overall rating
(3 reviews)Love the car , nice to drive , no sat nav or wind down rear door windows apart from that very good car .
Terrible jerky drive awful just awful hate it
Good overall spec at price and driving experience is very good. £8500-£9000 for 1.2 110bhp Flair as long as 40k-55k Mileage seems about average. Was looking at Renault Captur and DS3 but loved the style of C4 Cactus better.
