Citroën C5 Aircross (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Huge space for people and luggage	Really lacklustre to drive
Smart-feeling interior	Poor performance in the hybrid
Well-thought-out touchscreen	Refinement isn't great

Quick Summary

The Citroën C5 Aircross is a spacious, well-equipped family SUV that offers exceptional value for money. With a starting price of just over £30,000, it undercuts rivals like the Volkswagen Tiguan by thousands of pounds whilst providing more boot space and rear legroom. The interior is thoughtfully designed with a floating touchscreen that prioritises simplicity and usability, and the overall cabin feels more upmarket than the price suggests. Running costs are reasonable, with expected fuel economy of 40-45mpg in real-world driving, and the high 16,000-mile service interval keeps maintenance costs down.

However, the C5 Aircross disappoints behind the wheel. The entry-level 1.2-litre hybrid engine is underpowered with a sluggish 11.2-second 0-62mph time, whilst the revised suspension has sacrificed the old model's comfort without delivering better handling. The three-cylinder engine becomes raucous under load, and the automatic gearbox hunts for power. Refinement is poor, and the driving experience feels strained and uninvolving compared to rivals. The loss of the previous generation's flexible seating arrangement is also a notable step backwards for versatility.

Best for: Families prioritising space, comfort, and value over driving dynamics; those seeking an affordable, well-equipped SUV with a spacious interior and low running costs.

Not ideal for: Drivers who value engaging handling, refined engines, or the flexibility of sliding rear seats; those seeking a more satisfying driving experience.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the C5 Aircross if: You prioritise space and value, seeking a well-equipped family SUV with a spacious interior, smart design, and low running costs over driving engagement.

Consider alternatives if: You value engaging handling, refined engines, or require the flexibility of sliding rear seats; you seek a more satisfying driving experience.

Competitive Position: The Citroën C5 Aircross is a strong contender for budget-conscious family buyers seeking maximum space and value. Whilst it undercuts rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq and Kia Sportage significantly, it falls short on driving dynamics and refinement. The Kia Sportage offers superior handling and engine performance, whilst the Skoda Kodiaq provides better overall balance. However, for those prioritising practicality, interior quality, and affordability over driving pleasure, the C5 Aircross remains an excellent choice, particularly in entry-level trim.
