With the 296bhp Ateca, Cupra called time on its spell as a backing singer to pursue a career as a solo artist. A standalone brand rather than Seat’s in-house tuning division since 2018, Cupra elected to set out its stall with a very fast but ultimately compromised performance SUV. More inherently sporting models have followed, and while the most enthusiastic drivers will find the Ateca too heavy and too high-riding to be truly fun to drive, there is much to be said for its compelling blend of speed, comfort, style and practicality.
