Cupra Formentor (2020-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Attention-grabbing looks	Not cheap
Surprisingly practical given its shape	Entry versions not that well kitted
Enjoyable to drive	Firm ride on basic passive suspension

Quick Summary

The Cupra Formentor (2020-present) is a compact SUV with genuine sporting credentials and striking coupe-SUV styling. This Spanish performance brand's debut model combines bold design with surprising practicality, delivering rear headroom and legroom that rivals many boxier competitors. Boot space ranges from 345 litres in plug-in hybrid versions to 450 litres in standard models, with 60/40 split rear seats that fold nearly flat. The cabin feels plush by mainstream standards, with soft-touch surfaces and quality finishes, though some harder panels appear in lower areas. Available in two-tier V and VZ trim levels, the range spans from a modest 148bhp 1.5-litre petrol to a potent 328bhp 2.0-litre, with plug-in hybrid options offering up to 74 miles of electric-only range after the 2024 facelift.

The Formentor delivers engaging driving dynamics across its range. Entry-level petrol versions provide capable but unremarkable performance, whilst mid-range 2.0-litre options offer genuine pace. The range-topping 328bhp variant delivers hot-hatch-bothering performance with four-wheel-drive traction and adaptive suspension that balances athleticism with comfort. VZ models benefit from Dynamic Chassis Control as standard, enabling quick direction changes and responsive handling. Fuel economy is respectable, with petrol versions achieving 33-45mpg depending on engine size, whilst plug-in hybrids offer significant savings for short journeys. All versions feature a 12.9-inch touchscreen (post-2024 facelift), digital cockpit display, and comprehensive safety technology, though infotainment menus can be convoluted. As a used purchase, the Formentor offers strong resale values and desirable styling, though it commands premium pricing compared to conservative rivals.

Best for: Buyers seeking distinctive styling with genuine performance credentials, those wanting a practical family SUV with sporty character, and drivers interested in plug-in hybrid efficiency.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising maximum practicality over style, or drivers seeking a softer ride on entry-level models.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Formentor if: You seek distinctive styling with genuine performance credentials, want a practical family SUV with sporty character, or are interested in plug-in hybrid efficiency.

Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious, prioritise maximum practicality over style, or require a softer ride on entry-level models.

Competitive Position: The Cupra Formentor stands out in the compact SUV market through its attention-grabbing coupe-SUV styling and genuine sporting character. Whilst rivals like the Volvo XC40 and Audi Q3 offer more conservative designs and premium badge appeal, the Formentor delivers superior visual impact and more engaging driving dynamics, particularly in higher-spec versions. The Jaguar E-Pace offers similar styling boldness but lacks the Formentor's practicality and performance range. However, the Formentor commands premium pricing, and entry-level versions lack the equipment and refinement of some rivals. For buyers wanting a compact SUV that combines striking design, surprising practicality, and genuine performance thrills, the Formentor is a compelling choice, though it requires careful specification selection to justify its cost.
